Recognized Chess Variant: Four Handed Chess

A chess variant for four players, that form two teams, played on a cross-shaped board, formed by adding three rows to each side of an eight by eight board was already invented in 1784. Many similar (re-)inventions would follow.

The game has received a large following, and is still played nowadays. Several commercial variants on the same principles are available on the market. Interesting is the fact that the game was played between 1883 and the second world war in a Four-handed chess club in London.

Four-handed chess, played in two teams is a good multiplayer chess variant. I consider it highly superior above variants for three players, as the playing in teams make that general chess principles and combinations are still valid.
