Chess Rules for Kids: Sample Game

Turn 4, White's Move

White must protect his King. Remember, there are three ways to protect your King.

1. Move your King to a safe square.

2. Move a piece between your King and the piece attacking your King. This won't work if a Knight is attacking your King.

3. Capture the piece that is attacking your King.

White cannot move his King to a safe square. And he can't capture the attacking Queen. So he moves his Bishop between his King and the Black Queen. His King is now safe because the Black Queen cannot jump over pieces.

Remember, Bishops move through the corners of the squares in a straight line. You can think of it as moving north-east, north-west, south-east, or south-west.
