To combine pieces together, find the components of both pieces, then find the one piece which is composed of exactly those components. That will be the piece the two pieces combine into. Here's a tip for finding it. The combination of any two pieces will always have a number greater than or equal to the higher number of the two pieces which are combining.
To disengage one piece from another, first check whether the piece you want to disengage is actually a component of the piece. If it is, find the piece which is composed of all the same pieces except for the one which is disengaging. This is what will be left after the component piece disengages from the mega-piece. Here's a tip on finding it more quickly. The number for the remaining piece will be the sum of the remaining components.
