Somehow Jetan's many novelties need to be incorporated into standards for new departure on natural-seeming 10x10. Jetan almost 100 years ago was the breakthrough game for multi-path pieces, the necessary new piece-type. Smith's article under ''See Also'' called ''Jetan, the game of'' renders comprehensible most of the logical alternative interpretations author Burroughs may intend. Burroughs' motivation was thematic more than expository in drawing up plausible rules played in the other world of his novel; and the Chess does not figure as much in this early science fiction as Chess does in some other literature.
