The Encyclopedia Britannica (1911) says: 'The chancellor of an order of knighthood discharges notarial duties and keeps the seal.' Sounds good to me - and we all agree on the spelling! Can anyone give references for the noun (not the proper name) 'marshall' before, say, 1940?
