Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for November, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Zbigniew Kokosiński.

Asymmetrical chess

Our asymmetrical chess variant was inspired by the setup of an existing variant called Diagonal chess (well balanced).

Setup

The asymmetrical chess variant is played on conventional chessboard and 15 chessmen per player (7 pawns). The initial setup is shown in Fig.1.

Fig.1. Asymmetrical chess setup.

Pieces

Pieces are the same as in standard chess and have identical abilities, except for double pawn moves. Only seven pawns per player are allowed.

Rules

Rules of asymmetrical chess match exactly the rules of standard chess, except for double pawn moves.

Notes

This new 2-player variant is playable with any computer program for classical chess which allows setting initial positions. So you can try it immediately!
