Diagram is two-dimensional graphic display of the chessboard and pieces and it is a part of the chess notation. It is used for displaying chess games and positions, for game analysis, for solving chess problems, etc.
Chess notation is composed of letters and numbers, which are used for marking pieces and their position on the chessboard. The markings for pieces and fields of the chessboard were already described in previous chapters.
When marking position of the piece first we have to indicate it's label (K,Q,C,R,B,N,P). After that we have to mark the field. To determine the position of the pawn only the mark of the field can be used, but we can also use the letter P (Pawn) in before that.
Markings: marking 0-0 means castling to the right and 0-0-0 castling to the left. + determines check and ++ double check. In case when two pieces of the same kind can occupy the same field, we have to first determine starting-point of the piece and then the field which the piece will occupy. The mark : means that the opponents piece was taken. The checkmate position is marked with written word.
Example "a"
Black's move:
30. . . . Qi2+!? (black Civilian protects the queen). The white Civilian is in a difficult position, it can't take the Queen because there's no checkmate position.
31. Kg1 Qj2: (takes the Civilian)
Example "b"
White's move:
30. b7! . . . (Pawns can move backwards) the Pawn attacks a8 and Cc8 ....the black is in a difficult position.
Example "c"
The diagram offers many other possibilities.
