The following game was played as part of the 38 Square Challenge Tournament - Round One.

The Game

The game played was Flip Shogi. As specified in the rules, and unless stated otherwise, the standard variant of the game was played with no special rules in effect.

The Players

The players were Rob Nierse (playing White) and Hans Bodlaender (playing Black). The outcome of the game was a win for Black.

Situation after 21. ..., *Pb6+

22. Resigns
Rob writes: After 22. K-c6 follows Rxc4+ and on different ways mate is possible, (if I e.g. drop something in between it with N*a5). If I react with 
22. Kb5 follows N*a3+
23. Kb4;   P*a5+
24. Ka4;   R*c4+
I can then go on, but my K stays unprotected and I have no direct chances back. (Translated from Dutch by HB.)

Overall Comments

I liked Flip Shogi a lot. Pawns are the weak points in the rules. My third move was nice, as it prevented Rob from doing anything with his Ferz. In the end, I feared a *Nf3, so kept on giving check, which worked out quite well.
