pretty exciting games first round, Karjakin - Anand 0-1, fiery game, and
Topalov wins against Kamsky in fine style, also in b group Carlsen wins in
fine style too, should be good tournament judging by first round

yes, it seems that is the only way to promote a pawn, how bizzare, i can't
imagine a pawn promoting in this game, ever!
i don't know why it can't promote when it reaches the opposite end of
board, look how far it is away, lol, surely the little pawn deserves to be
promoted he he.
it seems that when it reaches the end, it turns around and goes back lol,
why would you bother?!
maybe sometimes, this would happen, i dunno, someone who has played this
game maybe could enlighten us more on how often this would happen

Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Mon, Jan 16, 2006 04:01 AM UTC:
lol, never thought of that, they must of had some method, cause they played
it at a club for 50 yrs.
maybe there was a lot of arguements ... 'hey yu can't move that pawn
there, that is illegal' .. 'no it's not, it's going that way' .. 'no
it isn't!' .. 'yes it is, i got it to the end and it's now going back'
.. 'no you didn't you cheat' ha ha :)

ok i have updated this game, in shatranjelephants variant, the
'RollingElephant', 'ButterflyElephant' and 'DrunkElephant' were not
always promoting when they should of.
'DrunkElephant' still may not always promote, i guess i named that piece
pretty well :)
also in 'chaturanga' variant, i reduced generals from 4 per side to 2
per side, for snappier play.

there is nothing wrong in doing what you are doing, it can only help the
game, if you end making changes because of anything anyone says
especially.
looks pretty bizarre, i'll be checking it out real soon. i did have to
move the zrf to where the bmp's are though to get it to work.
(will email ya) .. looks really good actually ...

oh yes i agree, 'zhouxia' is crap, the destroyerqueen is way too powerful. it is way too powerful, cause it plays against much weaker pieces. i think i have come a long way since then. still, it is all relative, the pieces i made in 'fallingsnow' make the 'destroyerqueen' look like a walk in the park, but i think 'snow' works, because of the super defence given by all the generals, and mainly, because basically all the pieces are very powerful, therefore no piece is way too strong over the others in that game. i don't think that some piece is just too powerful, period. it is not a 'black and white' thing, it depends on other pieces, and the way the game is constructed. i must admit though, i now have a passion for much weaker pieces.

Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Mon, Jan 16, 2006 04:17 PM UTC:
ok i havn't studied the pieces yet, first i just watched zillions vs
zillions, first game blue won, played cool, second game, red got
advantage, 4 trains to 3, but that was as far as it got, after lots of
moves and pieces staying same, it was going to be a draw, i had to end
it.
of course i'll be testing more, it looks great, i like idea of trains
being royal, and winning by capturing all trains, i am just wondering, if
after a certain amount of moves, person with most trains wins, or a draw,
like your americanchess 50 move rule.
you would know more, having play tested more, i will know more about what
i am saying in a few days. also, i am not saying that after 50 moves some
result should be attained, this game is bigger than 'american', so it
would have to be higher, no doubt.
but overall, yep, looks really good

take for instance, the 'missile' in 'american chess'. now this is a
superpowerful piece, able to go to every square on the board, except the
final rank. also it is much more powerful than all the other pieces.
and yet, it is not too powerful for the game.
it is the construction of the game ALONE, that not only makes it playable,
but actually makes it enhance the game ... amazing.

are you thinking this page is the total rules of chess?
this is the page where it begins i think
http://www.chessvariants.org/fidelaws.html
(hmm you can't think this page is it, you don't think 7 pages on rules
of chess is enough, given that this site is actually a site for chess
VARIANTS?)

maybe i was a bit 'full on' saying this game is crap, he he, i just
looked back at it, and there are many powerful pieces besides
'destroyer', but too many for my liking. i do think in this game,
'destroyer' is too powerful, but i wouldn't say in all games it would
be.
don't get me wrong, i do think over-all this game is bad :)
i did not know Michael had done this piece before, i couldn't find it
anywhere, so for interest, to see it play, i used this piece, along with
the bishop hook-mover, which i also could not see done.

all your questions can be answered on this page, under the headings
'Stalemate', 'Repetition of moves' and '50 moves rules'
please read 'stalemate' carefully, you don't understand what it means
judging by your questions.

quick answer, pawn can promote to queen rook bishop knight, doesn't
matter what is on the board i.e. you can have 2 queens ( yes, even more)

well i think i like the original, that is as you say, more complex, i don't think you should worry if it is a 'chess variant' or not, i rather like the idea of it not being a chess variant actually. i mean, the pieces are very 'chessy' anyway, it just doesn't have the 'mate' or 'capture king' rule. you can always try 2 variants if this is a 'worry' to you. updated--> oh wait, now it is more complex? i really would need to play this game .. anyway, still, i did like the idea of winning by getting both travellers to end of board, but i can't be sure without playing. regardless, it all sounds interesting, good etc.

well, i am always interested in multi-player games, and this no doubt looks
pretty amazing. As you say, zillions is not very good playing multi-player
variants, best for all human play.
now, i downloaded and set up, and yes, it is a little too big for screen,
so i did as you said, and tried to set up 'smaller' verison, but though
the pieces were now smaller, the board remained the same.
i don't know if i did an error in setting up, but it seems to me that the
board, in 'small.zip' is the same as the other one.
have i done something wrong?
this game could be really good, because of the piece movements, as you
say, because of short range moves, you don't have to worry about pieces
far away 'hitting' you.

yikes, those infernal elephants were still not promoting properely!
it seems, when given the option to promote to a general (moves like king)
or a pawn (with idea to promote up to higher piece than general), they
just got confused, and acted like idiots, for some reason.
so now, they can only promote to general, and they seem to like that,
except, the DrunkElephant, which is a complete idiot, no doubt, it is a
alcoholic lol.
so, i have just taken away it's ability to promote altogether!
ha ha yes, me, 1, DrunkElephant, 0, check and mate, game over :)
final verison can be downloaded at zillions site, it went up a few hrs
earlier.

db, you don't understand stalemate, for info on it and the 50 move rule,
which i think you are talking about see here ...
50 move rule - http://www.chessvariants.org/d.chess/6.html
stalemate - http://www.chessvariants.org/d.chess/5.html

paul, for info on king moves, see here ...
king moves - http://www.chessvariants.org/d.chess/4.html
(king can move anytime, as long as it is not moving into check, king can
move to attack also, it can capture pieces just like the other pieces)
