I am really sorry you have been so frustrated. One or the other of us is misunderstanding the rules. It seems to me that the plain sense (the rook can check as rook, cannon, or Chinese knight) does give checkmate in the positions you have diagrammed. Am I wrong? There was a problem a while back with the black king recognizing check from a Chinese knight but it has been fixed.

Does a pawn capturing an opposing unit on the eighth rank promote, or become a pawn of the opposite color? If the latter, is it then entitled to a double-move on the opposite-color's first rank and/or second rank?
I received a couple of e-mails from someone who for some reason hated the card chess applets, but I couldn't understand them. Both the link below and the link to the inventor's site are down.
