I have a problem with the eggs and the Queen. The eggs seem the perfect piece, because it's kind of too hard to beat it. The Queen uses the symbol of the Knightrider+Queen. A very powerful piece to never goes in play. In some movies it had a major role, like in the movie 2 when Ripley fights her with a battlesuit. How, without a piece capabe to capture witout never coming near the eggs and the Queen, can the Predators win?
I loved it and gave me a idea to a variant of the Dunsany's chess. A Federation x Borg variant, where the captured piece becomes assimilated and all the pawns get this power...
Thank´s, but looks like to me that the Duke, by simple analisys, would come to the existence of the Archbishop, the Centaur and the Amazon, just by adding the Knight move to the Bishop, King and Queen, as he did to get the Chancellor (Concubine). Adding the moves of the King to the Bishop and Knight, he would come to the Dragon Horse (Crowned Bishop) and to the Centaur (a Crowned Knight, to keep the line of names of the Duke)(again), as he did to the Rook to get the Dragon King (Crowned Rook). Add King moves to a Queen is useless. So, it´s a mistery to me why he didn't used that pieces.
I like it! The idea of use a 10x10 board is very nice and the array of the pieces is very ellegant. I just have a few questions: How did you got this piece/board ratio? You said that the optimum number would be 25, why not use 26 (perhaps with camels or knightriders), instead of 24, or a 2 cell piece (wich I'm still thinking if it's really worth)?
Thank´s! To me, a newcomer, feel's very nice to see a recognition of my thoughts. After all, all new comers believe that: 'everything was said before'. And it helps me to think a lot more; and helps in a creative process. I can get it right in the great picture, lots of thoughts. But in the microscope... Anyway. Thank´s a lot! And, coming from a guy with a good name in the site, it menas a lot to me. Thank´s!
I would like to see a move example of the archer, or, is he a dabbabah? Agincourt= Azincourt? If that's so, wouldnt it be nice to be a unequal army variant? A big french side vs a better english side? I belive that the buypointchess and the pick up your team chess would give you help. Pints to U!!
I've been thinking about some of these pieces too (the lance/spear family) and its/ very nice to see in it in play.
I've been thinking to use shogi pieces as default to all my chess variants pieces (FIDE too), it's easier to cut. But I'll try it in wood.
I'll try it in wood, and with a wooden open frame to keep table pieces togheter. So, every time I need a board, I cut a frame and put the table pieces inside. This coment is related to this shogi pieces coment: http://www.chessvariants.org/d.photo/symshogi/index.html

I liked it. But the shifter lools like useless. I would change it for a counter-faerie (moves like a rook and captures like a bishop). I also loved some demons begin in the middle of the board. Best 4UAll!
This game, I don't know why, keeps me awake repeating its name in my mind, on and on. Just loved it! Fegus, beware... You are too close from the truth... The Grail... The Holy Blood! I guess uoy saw The Da Vinci Code in the movies, if you look well, you'll see at Sir Ian McKellen's house a chess set in the studio where they explain about the plot. A very nice chess set, by the way.
Just today I was thinking if we had hit a wall in piece development. What was left to be done? Never crossed my mind a shortrange piece, and variations about it. Thanks a lot! I do even believe that part of the system could be used to create longrange pieces as well. Actually I do believe that its a perfect guide to create pieces no matter the range. Three pieces that crossed my mind in this weekend was shortrange, but, I had then just stored to see if someone already created and used. They are combinations of man (Ferz + Wazir)[m] with the Alfil [A], the Dabbabah [D] and the Alibaba [Ab]. As the FAD and the champion, from Omega Chess, I've felt that they are 'shogiesque', as the: flying dragon, kirin, phoenix (waffle), and the violent ox. My pieces are man+Alfil [mA], man+Dabbabah [mD] and man+Alibaba [mAb]. Thanks a lot again!
I have a question about castling: If a hook is hurled, and captures a piece, and then, is hurled back it stills keeps the castling possibility? (remember, the capture happend when the rook landed in the destination square). Does this ability considerated to calculate the value of the piece? After all increases the value of other pieces significantly. Or the short movement and the impossibility to take other pieces is to balance it? Thanks.
Greg the idea of shortrange pieces be a better way for defense can create a 'royal guard' around the king that leaves more room for the longrange pieces use all of their offensive capabilities.
A doubt strucked me. The 1, 2, 3, 4 squares range is a absolute value (no matter the size of the board) or a n/2 range (where n=8)? Looks silly to ask that, but, in a 8x8 board the piece crosses 1/2 board in a move, but in a 12x12 it just crosses 1/3, while a n/2 piece would still crossing 1/2 board. In a rectangular board the things could be worse, after all wich number should be used to get the number of squres crossed, or in a odd shaped one? Well, regarding the 1st question I don't really know an answer. About the 2nd, the lowest number should be used in the equation (round down), and in a odd shape is a case by base situation, but, as a rule of thumb treat the board as square or rectangular (which fits best) and do the math.
This is my first contribution to the project. I hope you all like it! http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/chessvariants/message/2520 Cheers! And more to come!
Does the hurling pieces have a page explaining and listing them? After all is a growing family. Best!
I loved it! To me, it is the birth oif a new kind of variant, that can be called template variant, or meta-variant, where the rules are devised and applied to another variant. Why not a hexagonal variation of crazyhouse/bughouse? I believe it is one of the most popular ways the things will turn to be in the CV universe. Best!
It's a question, not a response. When dealing with pieces that occupies more than one square, like the dev, how do you create the piece, a normal piece or a big one? Thanks.
Sam. Another way to split the knight is left/right. Seems a better piece than a backward knight and is a great piece ih a game where pieces can begin in the middle of the board. 'Right Knight' ...X. ....X ..K.. ....X ...X. 'Left Knight' .X... X.... ..K.. X.... .X...
An example, posted by you. http://www.chessvariants.org/index/listcomments.php?subjectid=Super+Chess+1993
One aspect about proliferation that bothers me is that people are creating chess variants, shogi, etc, using pieces and not adding a single one to the piececlopedia. When the last entry was written? The same piece gets lots of names, and not for the sake of the variation theme, just because the author thougt about it and didn't found a similar in the main research instrument of the site. Sometime this variation is created with the sole purpose to presente the 'new cool piece' created by the author, who had the genuine belief that piece was a brand new one, after all he looked at the piececlopedia and found nothing like it! I trully believe that, as I do, lots of people have their personal piececlopedia; no matter the notation used to translate the movement. What people doesn't think about is to unify the names of the pieces to keep the first name the official. If someone needs to rename it for the sake of the theme, ok, the descripition would be easier, something like: the cat= man. And, if a new piece is added, just take the time to write about it in the piececlopedia, even a piece that you know that isn't yours but you are the first to give credit to the author. Believe me, he would love to see the acknowledgement of his work and people who follow you would thank you just because you took the time to make their work easier. To me,a person that loves the harmony of the movement of the pieces, their ballet on the board, the piececlopedia is a vital instument of research. Please people, think about it and let's give the pieclopedia the boom that it deserves. Hugs!!
