Appreciate the input. As a non-inventor (to date), I don't want to restrict this to invent and play. I think an invent and play tourney is a great idea in addition to this one being discussed, but not instead of this one. I have no problem with participants being inventors and bringing their inventions. I'm intrigued by the more radical suggestion of bringing a different game for each match-up, none of which can be brought more than twice by the same player during the course of the tournament, but have concern that waiting for players to designate what game they want to play each round, the wait to see how many veto votes are cast, any replacement time for vetoed games... might slow things down, and as things slow down, players lose interest and we end up with a situation similar to the Game Courier Tournament #3, into about its 22nd month with a 50 % participation rate. To allow more variety, however, in each pool round-robin, in which each player plays 3 of their own games (as black), each player may bring one (play it vs each other player in pool), two (play one game once, the other twice) or three games (each game once). The player will not, however, be able to choose which game vs which opponent. That will be done randomly. At each level, when pools are reassigned (winner's pool;loser's pool), there will be a one week period in which participants can change the games they bring. Still looking at an April first kick-off for signing up. Any more input is very welcome.
The Official Registration Thread for the Pot Luck 2008 Tournament! If interested in playing in a round-robin tournament, starting in groups of four, please post a note. The tournament will be played with games brought to the tournament by the players. The player may or may not have invented the games. Each player may bring one, two or three games. If bringing one game, they will play it 3 times per round. If bringing three games, they will play each game once per round. If bringing 2 games, they'll play one once and one twice per round. Different players are permitted to bring the same games. If a majority of participants vote to veto a game, it's bounced and has to be replaced. A veto may be cast for any reason whatsoever. A replacement may also be vetoed by majority vote. Registration closes April 7th, 12 midnight, GMT. From that time, each registrant will have 7 days to put forth the game(s) they wish to play in the tournament. Upon the completion of the posting period, there will be a 48 hour veto period. If 48 hours pass without a majority veto, the game will be included. If vetoed, a new nomination will also get a 48 hour veto window. Each game brought will be an away game, meaning the bringer plays 'his/her' game as black. Each player will play each other player in their group of 4 twice, once in the game they brought (as black) and once in the game their opponent brought (as white). At the end of the round robin, the top two advance to the next level, the bottom two to the losers round. Interested players will be accepted in multiples of 4 (though if we end up with a multiple of 5 or 3 we may be able to tweak it). So...here we are... Step one: Who wants in? Sign up by April 7th, 12 midnight, GMT Step two: Nominate the game(s) you want to play between April 7th, 12 midnight, GMT and April 14th midnight GMT Step three: Once all veto periods are complete and games are set, a schedule will be set up. Pools will be organized based on current 365 day ratings. If interested, please sign up...should be a fun, conveniently organized, efficiently run, quick to start, reasonably timed tournament. Good point, Carlos... If you are still involved in any GC3 tourney games and would like to play in the PotLuck2008 Tourney, but feel getting involved in the early stages of the organization of a new tourney while closing out the late stages of an ending tourney is too much....please let us know and perhaps we can slow things up/down......my thoughts are that the PotLuck2008 won't actually kickoff until early/mid May, and if by then the GC3 isn't finished, I reckon (!) the still active participants can handle a new game or two if they so choose... Regarding Carlos' comment on veto time, I agree...a week it is!!
Rich, regarding the iago world tour...sounds cool. Won't be able to speculate on when the Pot Luck may end until we know the number of entrants. Donut is my son, getting involved in variants for the first time. Joe and Charles are 'at least two people entered into it, excluding the organizer or whomever is running it', so I guess the tourney is eligible for iago world tour if we think it'll be done by November. 7 more days to add participants!

Pot Luck 2008! Registration Deadline has passed, 7 entrants. We are now at the stage where participants name the game or games they would like to play in the tournament. You may bring one, two or three games. Each game must be named by April 14th. From April 14th to April 21st there will be a veto period. Four veto votes will disqualify a game. The person who suggested that game will have an opportunity to name a replacement. Please don't veto until the veto period begins. To name your games, simply add a message to this thread with the game(s) you want to play. There is still room for one more, so if an eighth player wants to join, first to claim space is in.

Couple of points. George may or may not choose a third game. If he doesn't, he has to decide which of the two he named he wants to play twice. Also, does TriMac HexChess have a preset? If so, where can I find it? If not, how can we play it?
Joe, saw your comment on the Pot Lock page on the wiki page. Was going to respond...but I haven't been accepted as a member. I think a vigorous discussion over there might be limited as Carlos, Juan and the Donut are not members (yet) either. Doesn't look like George and Charles are members, either. I'll encourage the others to join, but depending on how long it takes for acceptance, any discussion of vetos and the like might be better served here.

All games have been named. Roughly 48 hours left to change the games nominated. Time for a review of how the tournament will proceed. During the 7 day veto period any player may veto any game for any reason whatsoever. If you feel it is a bad game, if you don't like the game, or even if you love the game, have played it a lot and just don't feel like playing it now. Using a veto is simply a manner of expressing a preference. If you prefer not to play a game, feel free to veto it. If a game you named, or even invented, is vetoed, please don't take it as an insult. In fact, it may have been vetoed because others are afraid to play you in that game...which is a compliment in a way. Reminder...Each player will play each game that they nominated ONE time. They will play it against ONE other player in their pool. Which player they play it against will be determined randomly after the veto period. Been following the game piece discussion...and as a potential consumer, here's my take. I'm the father in a family of four. Kids are in ten and eleven. We all enjoy playing chess, chess variants and a variety of other board games. We have maybe 20 fairly standard board games. We enjoy chess variants quite a bit, and in fact enjoy inventing variants of any board games when we feel the playing field may not be fair under traditional rules. If/when we need new pieces, we usually just find something around the house, maybe from another game board, maybe from a pencil case or even the fridge, to represent a new piece. Recently played Wuss II with my daughter and we used erasers as the Wuss. Played a variation of falcon chess (8x8 board) and used lego firemen as the falcons. Played 8 stone chess using the Korean version of jacks (Gong - gi) as the stones. Much as I like the variants and the variety of pieces, think that I'd likely just improvise instead of buying pieces. One thing I might buy, if available, is a 10 x 8 board. Have been able to make do with checker + chess board, but it's a bit inconvenient. Anyway, as a casual yet enthusiastic chess variant player, and one who truly enjoys the alternative and obscure pieces...I'm afraid I wouldn't be a consumer. Hope I'm in the minority, as I'd really like to see chess variants spread and even become a profitable venture for those involved.

In random scenario 1, alpha1 is match 1, alpha2 is match 2, alpha3 is match 3 In random scenario 2, alpha 2 is match 1, alpha3 is match 2, alpha1 is match 3. In random scenario 3, alpha3 is match 1, alpha1 is match 2, alpha2 is match 3. All games will start at the same time and have generous time allotments. They will start as soon as Carlosly possible from or after April 21st (if no games are vetoed by 4 players). Which random scenario is used will be based on the following cricket match: Only Twenty20 International Bangladesh v Pakistan at Karachi - Apr 20, 2008 (18:00 local, 13:00 GMT) If the total number of runs scored (combined Bangladesh and Pakistan) results in the numbers 1, 2 or 3 in the ones column, we go scenario 1. If the number in the ones column is 4, 5 or 6, we go scenario 2. If it's 7, 8 or 9, scenario 3. If it is zero, we look at the number in the tens column. If that too is zero, we look at the number in the hundreds column. If that too is zero, than the match was called off and we look at the total number of points scored in the last NBA game to finish on Sunday the 20th.
