Thank you for your comments. I think I have completed the edits on this page. The actual game will be adjusted to match the instruction here very shortly.
I am thinking of designing a variant that has super pawns. A pawn that goes forward 1 , and can capture in the forward direction. It can also move sideways and capture sideways. The diagonals are gone. Would the players here like that? My first thought was to put that on a Shogi board.
I did not know there were existing pawns like that. I don't think I can add the "?" now, so you will have to imagine it. I was thinking of doing this as a variant of Pocket Shogi Plus. As a new person of Shogi, it sort of bothers me how all the pawns are subject to attack so easily. That really is not true, but part of my chess instinct thinks it is. Having a side movement would enable pawn chains. Part of me thinks that is not needed, and another part is thinking what would that be like.
I made a few changes to the symbolic set of shogi. I added a copper general, and tweaked the "flip" so the base color is pink. I feel it might be easier to a new player of shogi to identify enemy vs friends (pieces). I made a zip file and sent it via email to webmaster at chessvariants.com (I think). Is this the correct way to get a new chess set added to chess variants?
Is this ready to play? Does a 3-leap mean the frog can only leap out 3? Can it leap out 2? See the ? in the diagram.
Also I sort of want more frogs! Remove bishops and put in frogs for a total of 4 frogs? good idea? Once you loose a frog you've lost access to 1/2 of the board. What do you think of a pond in the center where a frog can jump in (1 move), make 1 orthogonal move in the pond (2nd move), and then leap out (3rd move). This would make a diagonal switch to the other side of the board. Please invite me. I'd like to play this game with you.
I sent my adjusted piece set as a zip file attachment to chessvar at yahoo dot com. Is that OK?
I would like to be added to the Tournament (If possible) is there a sign-up?
Super. Fergus, thank you so much for adding the copper pieces to your symbolic set. :) Now I have to make the time to do the coding. I'm looking forward to using the new copper pieces.
In a shogi-like game I am trying to add a copper general on the Black's 6th move and on Black's 20th move.
The built-in vaiable movenum seems to do the trick. The result of this is the copper appears at the end of the 6th move, and appears on the board. so far so good. I was suprised that it appeared at the end of the move.
When White moves, all is ok, but poof Black's copper general disappears. The adding of the Copper General does not appear in the "move list". I can live with that. :)
if the php program re-plays the move list between turns, this would explain my issue.
Any Advice?
Code snippet below:
// section pre-move-1
set mymove movenum;
if == 11 #mymove:
add c |11h;
endif;
if == 40 #mymove:
add c |11g;
endif;
OK, Thanks. Would the following be accurate: The server keeps track of pieces via the FEN CODE, and via the "moves text box". The moves text box is an array of movements. If you add a piece to the board you must populate the moves text box. for example: P -e5. If you don't do that the server (your computer) will not store the information.
Fergus, I know Musketeer Chess is new. I am about to resign a game. I had a bird behind the knight at b9. Aurelian, did B f4-d8 and capured my knight. As a bonus the Bird at b9 was captured. Is that working as designed? In a nutshell, The bishop did a capture to 2 pieces in 1 move.
At one time a few weeks ago, I got an email notice for each move. I am now getting no emails at all from chess variant. Is the email system turned off? Perhaps the website hotmail.com is blocking it. I do not think so because I checked my spam folder, and that is empty also.
Hello, the website chessvariants at one time sent email to my inbox. It appears to me that something broke and I no longer get emails from chess variants. (like when someone makes a move and it is my turn). I know of 1 other user that is having the same problem. Can you check if the mail system is working properly for you?
I have norton safe web installed. According to this app, there is 1 page at your web site that contains a phishing attack. The app will not allow me to go to chessvariants.com, I had to disable the app. Warning: Not an expert on phishing or how to stop it. Can you investigate the web page with caution (if it exists):
chessvariants dot com/mansubat.dir/mans01.html
Another interesting thing... Norton is reporting the web site as being located in England. is that true?
Thank you greg at looking at this. I can send you a print screen if you want to see what I see. Maybe there is a h-ref html tag that points to a known phishing web site. I do not know how norton does what it does! :)
Fergus, Auerelian and I are in the process of writing an article about Pocket Copper shogi. I would like to use screen shots. The game uses your symbolic set of Shogi pieces. May I use/display your symbolic set for the article?
@fergus, Catugo and I just attempted to play Mortal Shogi, something seems to be a bit off. Either I do not understand the rules, or there might be a bug. If you review the our recent game, can you see if there is something off? During my knight capture it seemed to me the knight did not go into the capture tray, but in the next turn after that, it seemed to be there. @catugo said a knight capture became a pawn. If you want we could play a game together as a way to debug the game. If you are willing to do that. Maybe everything is working right, but the game felt off.
I am getting an error after trying to attempt to edit one of the games I invented. Once this error occurs, it seems like the entire chess variant web site becomes unstable. Below is a cut and scrape of the messages I get after the system gets corrupt. My computer is a desktop, win 10, Firefox 56.2 borwser.
I'd say this issue started over the last 1 to 3 days.
I am trying to make a new game called Flank_Chess also, and that entire sub-program seems corrupt.
If you click on that one, the launch seems to go into an infinte loop, and I get a timeout, once that occurs everything is messed up. Including jumping to other web pages at chess variants. I was programming a sub-program last night around 10PM and the entire web site frooze up.
It's hard not to beleive that it was not my fault. If it was me, sorry.
What can I do to prevent this?
Based on past programming, once a program goes bad (feeding program play.php), I can never edit the program ever again. What I do is "reset" my creation back to standard chess, and type everything back in. It is painful.
Fergus, you've designed hundreds of games. What do you do when an edit session is saved and it contains a bug/error?

The web site seems to be running better. I am still getting various warning messages out of at least 2 php urls. #1 is createsubject.php (It is the web page that I am using to send the message. #2 is play.pgp.  I'm playing an active game of eight stone chess with catugo, and the picture attached is a screen image from the game after I made a move. This picture below seems to warn about 2 vars named PersonID and UserID.
snipped corrupted image --BMR
I tired to send my screen shot as a jpeg attachment, but the attachment does not seem to have made it into the comments section. Note the subject name above. I did not type in that hex value. The php program createsubject.php seems to have generated it , or the clink of reply (in comments url) generated that subject hex value . I'll try Internet Explorer, and see if it is a firefox issue.
If you want I can send my jpeg or anything else you need via standard email.
Internet Explorer, seems a lot more stable. I did not see any warning messages in IE at 17:57 EDT on Sun May 13th.
Thank you for your suggestions. I've made some updates to the rules.
Nice job on the updates. The web site is very stable. I really like what you added to the play game section. i.e. the checkmarks, the black background, and the new buttons to jump back to the game logs.
The url below
/play/pbm/presets/marseillais_chess.html
brings you to a choice of boards, but when you click a button to start, a basic "chess" program comes up with no code. Could someone who can fix issues, try to start a Marselillas game, and see if it works for them?

OK, I think I did it correctly. The instructions have been edited.
