It looks fun, but i have a few questions: 1. Can promoted elephant and knight be further promoted to pegasus and gold respectively? I suppose, no, as in shogi variants. 2. Isn't knight stronger than camel? Maybe, on large board they have same value, and it makes promotion interesting: in normal shogi gold and silver also have same value, so you have to think before promote or not promote. 3. How en-passant is possible if pawns captures as they move? Or you meant that they can move either diagonally or orthogonally forward, that is, as iron general or sergeant? 4. Is stalemate win or draw and can one mate with pawn drop? I want to try it when you'll answer these questions.
1. No, promoted elephant and knight cannot promote further. 2. I think knight and camel have same value or the camel is stronger. The reason for knights promoting to camels is their movement, knights are (2,1) jumpers and camels (3,1) jumpers. 3. I must have been sleeping when I wrote this. I'll upload the page as soon as possible. En passant is NOT in this game. :/ 4. As in shogi, you can't mate with a dropped pawn. I'll include this when I upload the page. Stalemate is draw, as in FIDE chess. Thank you for the comment! Hope you'll enjoy playin'!
Why does the Queen promote to a less powerful piece? While the piece that is normally called an Amazon (Queen+Knight) is more powerful than a Queen, the piece you call an Amazon in this game (Rook+Knight) is not.
The Knight is stronger than the Camel because the Knight can reach the entire board and the Camel only squares of one colour. Think 'Camel is to Knight as Bishop is to Rook'. Nor is the Camel's colourbound nature balanced, as the Bishop's is relative to the Knight, by the Knight's colourswitching nature (always moves to a square of the other colour), as the Camel is rankswitching (always moves from an odd to and even rank or vice versa). The Silver is also rankswitching, making it weaker than the Gold as the latter can triangulate (return to its square in three moves).
'Why does the Queen promote to a less powerful piece? While the piece that is normally called an Amazon (Queen+Knight) is more powerful than a Queen, the piece you call an Amazon in this game (Rook+Knight) is not.' Amazon is (queen+knight), I just screwed up a little. Thanks for the comment anyway!
The formatting on this page is bad. Descriptions of each piece should be on separate paragraphs (Add <p> between each paragraph in the rules text) Do the same thing with the rules section, it should be as text not as a image!
Thanks, I'm new to these pages so I don't know how to do things like this
Hafsteinn, on the whole I like this game. There have been many attempts to combine Chess and Shogi, and I even tried developing a few such ideas myself, but was never satisfied with the result that seemed neither fish nor fowl. Although I share some of the ideas the others have expressed here, I think the way you've blended them is a big step in the right direction.
I made preset: /play/pbm/play.php?game%3DShogchess%26settings%3DShogchess It have no pices, wich moves as non-promoted pieces, but are promotion forms of other pieces, but it's not hard to remember (or notation may be used).
