Knavish Shatranj. Shatranj with Knaves and Debtors. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Do the knave and debtor move the same as in Charles Gilman's game 'Knavish Chess'. I first thought these pieces moved fully as a knight with one piece having the horizontal dabbaba leap and the other the vertical dabbaba leap.

oh don't worry, i see that they do, these pieces are better than i thought!

I hope that the rating isn't over the top for something that, after all, was inspired by a variant of mine and uses its distinctive pieces.
Inotice that the piece with the most forward Knight moves remains in the Knight position, and iomagine that this is deliberate.
It is an interesting observation that although you replace the Knight as well as the Elephant with bound pieces (albeit less bound than Elephants) you still think that the army is about the same strength. Is it because the Knave and Debtor triangulate? Would a Shatranj army with the Elephant strengthened to an Alibaba (which again can triangulate) and Knight weakened to, say, a Crab also be about the same strength? There could be a whole series of armies here to fight each other.
Christine, as I understand it they are the same pieces as in my variant - that is, none of them have the full Knight move. In my variant only the compound of the two ha that (as well as the full Dabbaba move).

oh, and i think it is a interesting game set-up, i'm a big fan of the shatranj styled short range pieces, you should make a zrf of the game, be nice to see how it plays.

@Christine: Unfortunately, I do not even own an operating system necessary to run Zillions of Games; therefore I cannot make and test zrf files.

@Charles: Yes, replacing Knights and Alfils with Crabs and Alibabas should make another army for Shatranj with different armies. Now waiting for more radical approaches touching the rook and the wazir, too.

On the other hand, Fairy-Max is available under Linux, and because the Knaves and Debtors are regular Chess pieces, would be trivially able to handle it.

Oh, I see with the site being down recently some stuff was lost, like my game courier game with Carlos I had to redo a move I already had done. I posted here before it went down about releasing a zrf for this game, and i uploaded the game and some screenshots for the download page, should I do that again.
