I think is good to always have an engine! One can always play Cyborg chess! That solves the cheating problem!
Going through my notes on piece values in order to write the articles I've figured out HG Muller had helped a lot in the evaluation of these games. But he has said nothing lately. Does anyone know what's going on? I'd love the new apothecaries to have diagrams although it would be tough.
One of the last places where he left comments is here:
<< Mullers Short-Range Leaper Law >>
It's a short but useful thread to explain how leaping piece values can be estimated with a formula. I also did some work to try to "disprove or prove" the formula, and I found it to be very accurate (comparing the value of a guard and knight to that of a bishop for example). The formula now takes the name "Muller's Short-Range Leaper Law".
Btw, I like your idea of playing cyborg chess. It is currently being used in one game of "Chess on an Infinite Plane" but unfortunatelly, the computers don't help much because the game has not been well simulated by any code.
Hello Fergus,
While trying to post the apothecary games online I did two silly thing for which I deeply apologize as it is probably you who has to solve my problems.
Firstly, I accidentally posted an incomplete apothecary 1 article. Plesase disregard and maybe delete that one.
Secondly, and worst, as know I cannot post the real apothecary two article, I think yesterday evening I tried to post something entitled apothecary chess 2 as now I am receiving the following error when attempting to get to step 2 of uploading my apothecary 2 article. I am not sure what is going on here :(.
Array ( [0] => 23000 [1] => 1062 [2] => Duplicate entry 'MSapothecary-chess-2' for key 'PRIMARY' )
Thanks for your help!
There is no need to delete your first Apothecary Chess 1 article. Just follow the link in the menu under your name to "Your Unreviewed Submissions," click on the link to your first Apothecary Chess 1 article, then click on the link to add content to it.
I'm good Fergus, Now everything works I'm getting on writting the article (sort of speaking as I have in Notepad most of the content)!
Thanks once again for taking care of this wonderfull website!
Hello again Fergus,
I have completed one diagram for an initial position for apothecary 1 and apothecary 2. I'm not happy with the results, though because I cannot find all the needed pictures in one place. I used alfaerie but there is no picture that will reasonably represent the aanca for example (I used reversed bishop but I'm not very happy with that). No other set is better suited IMO. Is there a way I build a custom apothecary set that will have all the pictures I need? I know apropiate pictures exist on the website from H.G.'s diagram designer, but I don't know how to use them myself. My skills in html also border zero, so please be patient (you usually are) with your explanation.
Here is what I need:
King
Pawn
Aanca
Griffin
Archbishop
Chancellor
Queen
Rook
Joker/fool
knight
bishop
champion
wizard
zebra
elephant
camel
In total 16, there are 27 letters in the alphabet so I gues I'm coverred.
Thanks!
Also, HG Muller's interactive digrams seem to stop working; I think I've said that before!
I found a material about creating my own set, you've previously posted. I'm going to see how farI'm getting with it!
The Alfaerie: Many piece set in the Diagram Designer (under "All") might possibly have all the piece type figurines that you're seeking (or figurines strongly resembling/suggestive of certain types), if Fergus didn't mention it.
Kevin
That helps, but still for apothecary 1 I cannot find everything I need in one set, I need modern and animals, also I could not find the fool (joker, jester) anywhere, and I know it exists!
Ok, I found everything I needed for Apothecary 1 in Modern Fairy Pieces (I got a little creative) and in apothecary 2 in Historical&Compounds, and I decided to use the ferz image for the joker piece, what do you guys think of those solutions?
I am happy with those results even if I'd prefer a different image for the fool. What do you guys think. Please notice my choice for aanca and griffin (a bishop with a circle and a rook with a circle).
The choices you made seem alright to me, but if you might prefer the figurines to be even more like the piece types you want, I just took a look at the Alfaerie: Many piece set in the Diagram Designer, and I'm pretty sure all 16 piece types listed are depicted within the first 150 (or so) piece type figurines offered up when the Alfaerie: Many set finishes loading. You might look again, more closely, if you wish. Note that only 1 or 2 letters are used to label a figurine quite often, so there's a bigger chance you might have missed something you wanted. If you're in doubt, you can right-click your mouse on a figurine to check it's 'Properties' and then it will show, among other things, a longer name tag for the figurine. For example, one version of the gryphon (sp?) piece (is this the same as Griffin or Griffon?; the latter is in the CVP Piececlopedia and has the same figurine there) is labelled 'Gy' and looks like an odd animal head, while another choice for it shows 4 rooks linked diagonally, all in one figurine. That's assuming I've got how that piece type moves correctly. There's at least one choice for an Aanca, i.e. 4 bishops linked all in one figurine. A fool is labelled 'Fo'.

I've edited my previous post somewhat, mainly adding to it.
Got it, now it works like a charm, thanks for your help Kevin!
Fergus, I still have a bit of work on my submissions please don't mind them yet!
For some reason, I don't know what I have done, both the apothecary 1 submission and apothecary 2 submission have the same ID and I can't change one of them. How do I fix that? For now I'm done but I'm not sure, Fergus, that you can see both games. Apothecary chess 1 should have griffin, aanca champions and wizards, and Apothecary chess 2 should have chancellor, archbishop, zebra, camel and elephant. Which one do you see?
I see a submission for only Apothecary Chess 2, and its ItemID is MSapothecary-chess-1. You should create another page with an ItemID of MSapothecary-chess-2 and match the description of each game with the appropriate id.
An now it's the oher way arround. I, for some reason cannot modify the item id. I world be able to create a new item but this means redoing all the work. See the problem? Just, if you can now, save Apothecary 1 with another ID. and then save apothecary 2 with another ID. I'll try my best from this end!
I think I lost my work with apothecary chess 2, do you still have it?
I guess I upset the gods of chess when I decided to improve on their beloved orthodox variant. :( :(
You don't need to change an ItemID, which is not allowed. You just need to cut and paste content from one to the other.

Thanks for the update. Also, I think it's usually better to work on one game, and release it, rather than two at once.
Also (btw), I think games are fine even if they aren't in ChessV.
ChessV is awesome because you can play games against it, as well as see your moves analyzed. On the other-hand, if you play chess on-line with long time-control, you may always be worried your opponent might be using ChessV to help.
So some games not being in ChessV is good.
Also, we have to keep Greg busy with programming!!
