and perhaps even more oddly the Boat (possibly among others) seems to be missing. I'm very curious where these came from
There are many icons in all sets that haven't been posted yet. Ships and such will be in Part 3, for example.
As for where they came from, I stumbled across https://www.chessvariants.com/graphics.dir/alfaeriemisc/
a while ago, and soon after found https://www.chessvariants.com/graphics.dir/utrecht/
; H.G. more recently pointed me to https://www.chessvariants.com/graphics.dir/utrechtPNG/
. That, the main Chess Variant Graphics page, and the table on the Play-Test Applet are my main sources.
That said, I'm excited to see the updated set. And 400 icons (is that 400 or only 200) would seem to me to put it second only to Alfaerie!
Several are in more than two colors, so the actual count (by my reckoning) is 157.
And I probably will keep at least some of the old ones.
@BnEm: I can send the zip file, or upload somewhere here on CVP (but where?). Those I find ugly was the Rook and Bishop. My new (well, by new, understand 20 years old) are nicer.
400 icons in total but in at least 2 colors , black, white, and for few of them in 4 colors. So about 160 different approx.
The original Bishop and Rook are rough, but still usable. I could see, for example, the Rook being useful in a game themed around siege engines and bits of a castle shuffling around (Rook, Castle, Parapet, and so forth) where icons could run short, just as Part 2 implies possibilities for armies consisting entirely of Lions or Elephants.
Well, I've just about hit the size limit for this page, so there won't be any more added here for a while. I'll probably have to make a new section for "Enhanced Orthodox Pieces," including the Pawns already here plus Ultima Queens, variations on Knights (Wide, Narrow, Left, Right, etc.), Riders and Roses, forward/backward combos, and so forth.
At the same time as I move those Pawns, I'll probably delete the Men table as well, at least if I have places to put all of them. (I have most of them already figured out, in fact.)
Now to see if Part 2 has any space.
@Bob:
With the missing pieces I wasn't so much referring to your page(s); this is a pretty big undertaking and there's no indication or expectation that it's ready yet (assuming it can ever Satisfy Particular Standards for Completeness). I was referring to the Utrecht SVG set that you linked to earlier in the thread
@Jean‐Louis:
The obvious place to upload them would be in a graphics dir associated with one of your pages, though I agree it's not really clear which one to choose as the original page is pre‐‘post‐your‐own’. That would probably be better though than sending it to me; the email address on my profile works but is very annoying to access (Yahoo! dislikes Tor), and other people may be interested too. Worst case, you could always post it as a new page I suppose (depending on how much work you want to bother putting into it). Though tbh I was half‐expecting Bob would evetually upload them anyway ;)

Ah, OK. Understood.

I do have a lot of them in Parts 2 and 3. :)
I'm waiting to update this one (much) until I can migrate the Pawns.
As things currently stand, the sections will be:
- Orthodox pieces, and the most common compounds and such.
- Animal icons.
- Clergy, Nobility, and Military
- Orthodox extensions (ski, skip, charging, retreating, riders & roses, limited-range, etc., and many Pawns)
- Generalized symbols
- My original pieces
I may make #5 Shogi-relevant pieces (not actual Shogi tiles, but pieces from Shogi games), and move symbols and originals down one each, for a total of 7.
Since I've been able to open up Part 4 now, I've migrated the QBRMs and the Pawns to that page, freeing up a bit more space on this one.
That space will probably be taken up by icons from my SVG work, though if someone points out something that I've missed I'll try to include it.
Even though there are still some icons to upload and catalog, I think that this page and its four companions are ready enough to be published.
I think I now have everything uploaded that's likely to go up for a while.
In other words, not much more will be happening before all five parts of this are published.
I changed the Type of this page and the other ones in the same series to Desktop Publishing. Since only games may be favorited, I deleted the favorites someone had made of these pages. I also restricted favoriting to published games. In the future, I will locate and delete the favorites people have of unpublished games.
The change to DTP is overdue; thanks. :)
Hopefully approval won't take too much longer.
(I've found good reason to moved some of Parts 2 and 5, and possibly other areas, into a Part 6 of personal originals. But I'm out of open slots.)
Just a reminder that this article and its four companions are (as far as I can tell) ready for publication. :)
My thanks for publishing this and Part 2; however, all five parts were supposed to be an all-or-none thing.
I have something of a similar dilemma (though maybe not too worrisome in my case), if my SOHO Chess and Wide SOHO Chess get approved widely apart in time, as their pages have links to each other - that's what it turns out I risked, in including them in my 10 total submission [queue] slots, back in late December.

I could've sworn I've never seen some of those Utrecht pieces before: the winged pawn, animals with riders, bow and arrow, birds on hind legs, ⁊c are totally new to me fsr… and perhaps even more oddly the Boat (possibly among others) seems to be missing. I'm very curious where these came from
I have to agree about the original Cazaux graphics; while some of them are maybe not quite up to modern standards I've long had a soft spot for them. I'm really fond of the King, the pawn's slightly exaggerated design is rather neat, the Ferz/Wazir/Prince are indeed really nice, as is the Duke; and whilst individually I'm not sure any of the others stand out as particularly appealing (esp. compared to some of the other sets around) the overall æsthetic of the old diagrams that use them I find to be quite pleasing.
