A. M. DeWitt wrote on Thu, Feb 29 02:05 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 01:53 PM:

You haven't turned off all the changes though (transparent menu background). May I suggest you work on this in the .org site to not affect users until you're ready with the changes?

Yeah, the current transparent background for the top menus looks terrible. Doing these tests on the .org site would be way better.

Bob Greenwade wrote on Thu, Feb 29 03:41 PM UTC in reply to A. M. DeWitt from 02:05 PM:

I'm glad it's not just me seeing this (the transparent-background menus). I first caught it while on the road, and I thought something had happened with my laptop's browser.

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Thu, Feb 29 04:02 PM UTC:

Can you also make read links as modified blue instead of red, white input areas instead of black ones, and not monospace double-underlined external links in normal fonts?

I write what I see.

And if others want you to experiment in .org, can you at least (yeah I’m conservative in that theme!) return some old fonts (Noto Sans and Courier New)?

Again, all was fine, why you changed it;)?

I never took them away. See my earlier response to you on that subject.

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Feb 29 04:59 PM UTC:

Why some words, for instance in the list of logs "Your Games in Game Courier" are in RED now? What's the meaning of that?

If no meaning, I preferred before, that is perturbating.

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:05 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 04:44 PM:

Is it possible to use the site with different fonts at least at my laptop? Are fonts changeable in ctrl+U?

Changes simply cut off my probability to use CVP from phone((( fare it well…

Why some words, for instance in the list of logs "Your Games in Game Courier" are in RED now? What's the meaning of that?

yeah# but this page uses ‘em correct

also

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:13 PM UTC in reply to Lev Grigoriev from 06:14 AM:

Yes, now. So what?

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:16 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from 05:13 PM:

That. For me it’s on all pages except for lists.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:20 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 03:03 AM:

While the fonts look correct for me in Safari on my iPad, they did not look correct on Edge. Using Edge on my PC right now, VisBug is reporting that the fonts are what they should be, yet the serif text clearly looks like Georgia instead of Literata. The other two look correct on my PC, though on my iPad, only Noto Sans appears to be showing correctly, though maybe it is just using another font with bars on the I. So I'll do a more complete test for Noto Sans.

abcdesfgijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

1234567890 !@#$%^&*()_+

Here is the same text with the class set to sans:

abcdesfgijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890 !@#$%^&*()_+

And here it is with font-family set to var(--sans-serif):

abcdesfgijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890 !@#$%^&*()_+

And here it is with it set directly to Noto Sans

abcdesfgijklmnopqrstuvwxyz ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ 1234567890 !@#$%^&*()_+

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:23 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 05:20 PM:

It seems that there’s no diff between 1st (sans) and 2nd (sans-serif) font examples… and it looks like Helvetica. For me.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:40 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 05:20 PM:

On my PC with Edge, the sans serif font looks like Noto Sans in each case. The I has bars, the * has five points, the Q has a short tail that is only on the outside. On my iPad with Edge, the * has six points for sans and --sans-serif, which is not typical of Noto Sans or Helvetica. Also, the tail of the Q crosses it, which is not typical of Noto Sans. But for "Noto Sans", it is showing a serif font. Noto Sans does appear to be in use in Safari, though it is treating the ten digits as a phone number.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Thu, Feb 29 05:54 PM UTC in reply to Lev Grigoriev from 05:23 PM:

The issue with the fonts should now be fixed. It was because I had placed some CSS code ahead of the @import statement used to load the fonts. As it says in the documentation for @import,

An @import rule must be defined at the top of the stylesheet, before any other at-rule (except @charset and @layer) and style declarations, or it will be ignored.

After I moved it back to the top, I got the correct fonts in Edge on my iPad again.

I don't see what you're referring to. Where should I look to see this?

Kevin Pacey wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:00 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 05:40 PM:

Nothing against change on CVP in general, but on a personal note I've felt that most changes in my life have been for the worse, not for the better (e.g. cost of living...). One former Chess President of Canada once wrote that people don't like change, and when it happens they prefer it in small doses.

From a Google blurb, re: why do people not accept change?:

'People will resist any change they see as an imposition and will naturally support any change they are part of. They may also fear losing control over aspects of their work or personal life that are important to them, such as their autonomy, their relationships, or their status. Jan 20, 2023',

I recall there is also a passage in Macheavelli's(sp?) 'The Prince' that states to the effect that someone proposing something new has lukewarm supporters at best, with much strong opposition otherwise...

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:01 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 06:00 PM:

For me it’s EVERYWHERE for once-clicked links. Except for lists, as I stated above.

timurthelenk wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:25 PM UTC:

I don't know what is going-on here. The pages look is very unpleasant. All menus appearing from the top bar are now transparent. Some fonts seem changed too. Very difficult to read. I use Firefox.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:32 PM UTC in reply to timurthelenk from 06:25 PM:

Have you tried refreshing your cache? I have purged the CSS files from the CloudFlare cache, but it's up to you to clear your browser cache.

I use Firefox.

So do I. On what device or with what operating system are you using it?

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:36 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 06:00 PM:

It was for example, but not only, on the page showing my games in progress. I was looking at it from a Windows computer. Now I'm back home with a Mac and I don't see the problem anymore. Maybe you change back something. I will react if it comes again.

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Feb 29 06:41 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 06:32 PM:

Maybe it was due to the cache. I hate to do this because I'm losing other things when I do purging the cache.

Please Fergus could you also answer my question about the game I had with Paul and which has been abruptly terminated? Is there any possibility that we retrieve it? It would be appreciated. Thanks

There is no need for that. I have now put a theme switcher form in the Tools menu, and until the dark theme is ready, intentionally switching to it on a page-by-page basis will be the only way to see it. This will allow people to give feedback on it while I'm still working on it but without messing things up for them in the meantime.

Ben Reiniger wrote on Thu, Feb 29 09:42 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 09:15 PM:

Clearing cache on refresh has fixed the menu backgrounds being transparent, but it has introduced some font issues like Lev and others have mentioned: the markdown guide below this comment editor has link+monospace formatting that's different and somewhat unpleasant, links in the footer now have a background on hovering (!?), though I don't get the clicked-links in red.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Thu, Feb 29 10:21 PM UTC in reply to Ben Reiniger from 09:42 PM:

External links are now distinguished by being monospace and double underlined. David had previously used monospace for external links, but they didn't stand out as much as double underlined links. Also, his CSS was working only for links with the extern class, and I changed it to recognize external links by their URL. In tests, I judged that double underlined links look best when the text is monospace. So, using them together works better than using one by itself.

Other links too. Links are more noticeable if something changes when you hover the mouse over them.

I don't get the clicked-links in red.

I don't get them either.

I've started occasionally getting full-page google ads on my phone when clicking from one CVP page to another (or coming back to a page from a sleeping screen). They seem to be between the two pages: the second page takes a moment to load after I dismiss the ad.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Fri, Mar 1 01:36 AM UTC in reply to Ben Reiniger from 01:12 AM:

I have turned off auto optimization in Google Adsense.

Lev Grigoriev wrote on Fri, Mar 1 05:52 AM UTC:

Yahoo! Fonts are returned! (Safari, iOS, looks fine).

Only problem is that links that you have clicked are red, as Cazaux stated.

UPD: and transparent menu bar.

UPD2: and homepage itself is fine with font colors.
