I think that this is a great game and it is similar to the popular chess. it is fun and you can play it with four players instead of two.

The illustration at the top is very amusing. For those familiar with the British sci-fi series Doctor Who, the 2:2 leapers resemble daleks zapping each other across the board.

The diagonals divide the board for the pawns. However a pawn is played he can never cross the line, he stays on his side of the line. I think its a help for playing.
We have found that it is very hard to checkmate a king because of the medieval move of the bishop, so we use the single-king-has-lost-variant of the checkmate.
Do you let the bishop leap? Does he capture also by leaping?

Otherwise a very fun and interesting variant.

Of course, bishop also capture with leap: it's original move of bishop, it got move wich is standart nowdays later. By the way, it also will be interesting to play this game using modern rules (but change starting position, or bishops will capture each other on first turns).

It is true, the 'bishops' are in fact alfils, namely pieces that jump two steps. So Murray must be wrong. Otherwise the bishops have no chance to be active, other than being exchanged along the diagonal. I have implemented Four Seasons Chess with alfils here:
