Ganymede Chess. Mark Hedden's idea for "a large chess variant with many weird pieces...which wouldn't seem too different from orthodox chess".[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

Though I've managed to get a fair representation of the pieces present on the board at the start of this game, I can't say, at this point, the same for the pieces that can come as a result of promotions. It would be nice if someone could design some.

I've updated this page to show all the promoted forms of the pieces and their notation.

I agree with Mark Hedden that John William Brown's Spearman, which functions optionally as backwards-forwards rook or unidirectional bishop, is 'wonderful.'

Reminding one a bit of Betza's Weakest Chess.

A further 'evolved' piece might also be allowed to turn one more time to allow it the option of moving as a side-moving rook, but we don't have the graphics for that yet.

It's always nice to hear John William Brown's name mentioned. He is a true innovator and I highly recommend his book Meta-Chess to any chess variant designer. Adjectives for the book: well thought out, imaginative, innovative, and methodical! One of these days I'm going to get my copy of Meta-Chess bound as a hardcover (it is currently comb-bound).

On that note, I will also say that I do not know if and when his updated edition of Meta-Chess is coming out. Anyone out there know?
