Please review this game for publication. Thank you so much!

By the way, I was not sure how to make the link from the Kangaroo to the piececlopedia entry for Kangaroo (Newton), so if you could please add that I would appreciate it very much!

King of the Hill is normally played (e.g. on chess.com or by Fairy-Max) on an 8x8 board.

@Paul Newton: to make a link to that piececlopedia page is easy. Copy the link. Then edit your page. Toggle the "source" button of the section where is your text to get out from html. Then you will activate the link button. Select your text (here "Kangaroo"), activate the link button and paste the link you memorised there.

I expect this is a different game that shares a name and similarities with the game you know, because both are based on the same children's game.

H. G. Muller wrote on Thu, Mar 16, 2023 06:19 AM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 01:06 AM:

Well, I don't know that children's game, but it doesn't seem a good idea to launch a new chess variant with the same name as an existing one.

Maybe it has another name in Dutch. It is an unstructured physical contest in which boys, usually, individually vie against the other boys for control of the top of a hill through unarmed combat. It's well-known enough in English that there was an adult cartoon named after it.

Out of their remaining twenty pieces, each player selects and places 16 pieces as they wish in the four spaces orthogonally adjacent to their Marshal, their Cardinal and the Queen (in both directions).

Do you mean multiple pieces on the same space? Or do you mean one piece on each the four closest spaces on each of the ranks and files occupied by the Marshal, Cardinal, and Queen?

I searched the index of existing games alphabetically as you suggest in the article on posting new games and I did not find any reference to an existing game named King of the Hill. I will modify my game's name, but you might want to check and see if all games are properly coming up when and alpha index search is done...

If the King is on 1A, the Queen will be on 2B, the Marshall on 2A and the Cardinal on 1B. The remaining pieces will be placed on 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F, 2C, 2D, 2E, and 2F.

@Jean-Louis Cazaux. Thank you for the instructions, I will update the page to link to the Kangaroo (Newton) entry in the piececlopedia.

💡📝Paul Newton wrote on Fri, Mar 17, 2023 02:16 PM UTC:

I have changed the name to "King of the Mountain" and I have added the link to the piececlopedia as well as editing the text of the setup section using the rank and file wording and including the example using the board square references. If there is anything else that you think needs to be added, edited or clarified, please let me know. Thank you so much for your time and effort to make this website the excellent site that it is!

Not every chess variant is invented by a CVP member, and it is not uncommon that those that are not do not have a description page here. So it is worthwile to also search with Google. "King of the hill chess" immediately points you to chess.com.

💡📝Paul Newton wrote on Fri, Mar 17, 2023 09:26 PM UTC in reply to H. G. Muller from 03:20 PM:

I am well aware that there are many variants available commercially and on other sites that are not on the CVP. I merely thought from reading the instructions regarding posting a new game on the CVP that the intent was to not have multiple member created games on the CVP site with the same name. Thank you for clarifying that for me. It may be helpful to make that a bit more clear in the "How to Post Your Own" article as well.

Are there any further issues that need to be addressed with this before it can be published? I think that I made the necessary corrections, but I am not sure if I missed anything. Thank you!

Its boards are having the same problems as in your other game. They are too large, and when they resize to fit the screen, the rank and file markers are too small. Perhaps you have a 4k monitor, but I have an HD monitor, and I expect HD monitors are still more common. On an HD monitor, the maximum screen height is 1080 pixels, and a height of 3025 pixels is overkill. Actually, it's overkill even in 4k, since its maximum height is 2160 in landscape. But if you have a 4k monitor in a portrait orientation, you could view a whole board image without resizing it.

💡📝Paul Newton wrote on Mon, Mar 20, 2023 09:02 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 12:50 AM:

I am not sure what to do to correct this problem. All I did to make the images was to copy the image out of Excel and paste it into Paint.net and save it. I am not an uber-technical computer user and I truly do not know how to fix the number of pixels in an image. I am more than willing to make any fixes that I can, but to do this one myself would require some clear and simple instructions from someone who knows how to do it...

💡📝Paul Newton wrote on Mon, Mar 20, 2023 09:29 PM UTC:

I have tried to re-size the boards one more time. If this still does not work, please let me know what I can do to fix it. Thank you for your patience with my lack of technical acumen!

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Mon, Mar 20, 2023 10:45 PM UTC in reply to Paul Newton from 09:02 PM:

I didn't know that Excel could be used for making board diagrams. Anyway, the closest thing I have to Excel is LibreOffice Calc, and I've never used it that way. Paint.net will let you resize images using the Resize menu item in the Image menu. You may also use the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl-R.

I have saved the new images that I hope will be the correct size now. Here's hoping it worked...

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Mon, Mar 27, 2023 01:24 AM UTC in reply to Paul Newton from Sat Mar 25 03:43 AM:

I changed some text that still used the old name to use the new name, and I published this. I didn't change the ItemID, which affects the URL, because that takes more work, and you might prefer some vestige of the old name. If not, I can change that too.

💡📝Paul Newton wrote on Mon, Mar 27, 2023 08:28 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 01:24 AM:

The only reason I changed the name from King of the Hill to King of the Mountain was due to the comment below about not wanting to post a variant on the site with the same name as an existing variant elsewhere on the internet. While I do prefer King of the Hill, King of the Mountain is also fine with me.

I am not a programmer, so if anyone who is would like to make a Zillions file or a Game Courier preset for King of the Mountain, please feel free to do so. I only ask that you let me know.
