I am still playing the opening moves in one of these games. However, I've noticed that the knights are immediately under attack from the bishops from the very first move (provided a central pawn is pushed,) and once they're captured the bishops immediately threaten to capture the smothered rooks. Also, they're only protected by the two new major pieces.

Can a chess variant be too exciting? After 1.e2-e4, j7-h6 2.j1-j4 the White Lion threatens j4-i5, attacking the undefended Rook(i8). You can expect to jump right into middlegame tactics in this variant. Examples: see my two computer assisted test games, recorded on this site.

Objectively there is too much power for such a - relatively - small board, but it is nice - though difficult - to play. The Unicorn is not easy to handle, but it is a very elegant piece.

You mention that Jetan has long fascinated you. But I see few parallels between this game and Jetan. Can you please explain the connection and/or inspiration?
