Before discovering that this piece had already been invented I saw the possibility of it and thought of the name Yeoman - as one step above the peasantry that the standard Pawn represents. It is certainly a snappier name.

If a game of chess were played with one army containing normal pawns, and the other of Berolina pawns, who would have the advantage? In other words, which is more powerful? It would seem that regular pawns are better at teamwork, while Berolinas are better solo, but what does experience tell?

Ralph Betza, a very good chessplayer, playtested your scenario and suggested that the two armies would be about equal. For more discussion of the issue, please see the bottom of this page.

Orthogonal sliders already worth more than diagonal sliders, but with this pawn, orthogonal sliders worth even more than diagonal sliders.
