It's very good game. I can suggest rule to make one pawn- pieces, 10 or 8
(depending on board size) of same pieces must be put on 2nd rank.
Pawns may have such propertys: they must not have more than 6 options to go
and no more than 2 of them can return pawn to previous rank; pawns only
pieces, wich can promote.
By the way, there are one mistake in your list of pieces: the thing, you
called 'Chinese pawn' is rather Japanese pawn: Chines pawn can also move
sideways on opponent's half of board and can't promote.

I'd like to add my thumbs up to Pick-the-team chess that can be extremely intense with two aggressive players.

This game can be well played by humans with this Ed Freedlander's Java
applet: http://www.pathguy.com/chess/ExoticCh.htm
(I sayd 'by humans' beause computer can't choose piece itself, but it
can control them).

Pao or Grasshopper placed on a square of row 2 or 9 in opposition of enemy King is vevy dangerous.

It's me, who suggested rule about pawns. I think, it's not good enough: knight, wich have no 2 of his backward moves is also pawn! Here is some changes: backward moves can be nly to adjecent squares. If non-capturing forward moves are also to adjecent squares, pawn can make several forward moves on it's first turns (depending on board size). En-passant on skiped squares. Also, i think, it's better to limit number of choise to 5. What to you think about pawn properties?

What are the origins of te pieces names?

Mostly the Mecklemberg, Defending and Fish pawns?

Thanks!

Mecklenberg Pawns, or Mecklenbeck, promote early, http://chessvariants.org/other.dir/mecklenb.html, and it is in Knappen-cited http://www.dieschwalbe.de/lexikon.htm. Fish Pawns must not be after person or place but like woodpusher.
