I Don't think the timer should be on every square, but on certain squares only, otherwise there would be too many pieces falling through the board.

But why do you think it is excellent? I think it is a highly interesting attempt to implement on the chessboard something that happens elsewhere; but to actually play the game, especially without computer help, is a little bit awful because of the difficulty of keeping track of the timings of the trapdoors. The companion game is 'Koopa Chess', also based on Mario. It was written post-NOST and pre-HansB, so it isn't available anywhere. A copy of the rules of Koopa Chess is included in the box which has been packed for a year and all I need to do is carry it yo the post office and put some darned postage on it.
The rules of Trapdoor Chess could be applied to a 3d board, only pieces would fall down one level, capturing if it falls onto another piece, even if it's of the same colour, and dieing if it falls down the bottom. Could prove to be interesting. Question is, though, after falling would the trapdoor one square below start ticking?
Do trapdoor clock resets if piece on trapdoor is captured? I like Tim Stiles's comment: it makes even more Mario feeling! By the way, rules he suggested, can also be applied for 2d boards: think that board is sideview, like in platform arcades (for exaample, white moves right and black moves left). Here some other things from Mario games may be added!
