Haynie's Primary Chess

Chess variants on a smaller board, e.g., a 6 by 6 board have been invented several times anew, see e.g. Diana or Los Alamos Chess.

This variant of Billy Haynie is similar, but has a somewhat different setup, removing in this case the knights from the board.

Rules

The game is played on a 6 by 6 board, with each player having a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops and six pawns. The setup is as follows:

I.e., the usual setup of chess is modified by removing two rows, and the columns with knights in the opening setup.

Castling is possible: when castling, the king moves one square in the direction of the rook. Pawns have no initial double step, and can promote to queen, rook, or bishop. All other rules are as in usual chess.
