Free-for-all Chess
This variant, mentioned in The Encyclopedia of Chess Variants, was invented by Jed Stone in 1982.Rules
The rules of orthodox chess are followed, but now in a turn, a player may either move one of his own pieces or a piece of the opponent. It is allowed to move the same piece as the opponent moved before, possibly (in case of a piece that is not a pawn) undoing the move. It is also allowed to move a pinned piece of the opponent such that his king goes into check. (Pritchard does not state if a king may be moved into check - one would assume that one is also allowed to move the king of the opponent into check.)
Comment
As only pawn- and capture-moves cannot be reversed, it seems that draws are quite likely in this variant.Written by Hans Bodlaender.
