Secret Bombs Chess
Setup
Normal pieces of FIDE chess is used, and setup like FIDE chess, however you also use a deck of 32 cards, one for each square of the first four ranks of the board (descriptive notation). Shuffle the cards and deal three cards to each player. The face of these cards are visible only to the player who holds them.
Rules
On your turn, instead of making a normal move, you may play a card from your hand, and place it face-up in the discards (keep only the top card of the discard pile visible).
If playing a card, depending on what piece is on the square the card refers to on your side of the board, you do the following:
- If it is vacant, your turn is passed.
- If it contains any piece other than a king, that piece is removed from the game.
- If it contains a king, the king is moved to a vacant position of your choice as long as it does not put that king into check.
It is subject to restrictions:
- Cannot put yourself into check.
- Cannot escape pictorial checkmate.
A player with no cards in his hand draws three cards from the draw pile. If there is not enough to draw three cards, then draw what you can, reshuffle all discards to make a new draw pile, and continue until you have three cards in your hand. If a player has reshuffled in this way, that player gets an extra turn as long as his opponent is not in check.
Notes
A subvariant: Pieces removed by bombs are replaced on a vacant space where that kind and color of piece can start, if there are any such vacant spaces that will not put you into check from doing so. (Moving bishops to the wrong color of squares is OK)
A further subvariant applies this rule to both normal captures and to bombs.
