There have been several attempts to create a Chess variant that nullifies opening preparation while still being close to standard Chess. Neoclassical Chess (Nc Chess) by Gabriel F. Bobadilla might be the closest yet; it is played exactly according to the standard rules, except that the first six moves (three by each player) are randomly generated by an algorithm. Variants with fewer than six generated moves are available; if the number is odd, Black starts.

It is analogous to the three-move restriction in Draughts (Checkers).

The algorithm is currently available as a no-cost (but not free) application for Android, iOS, and Windows (incl. Windows Phone).
