Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for November, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, (zzo38) A. Black.

Xorix Shogi

Setup

Same as Shogi

Rules

  1. All pieces, when they promote, keep their movement ability they have and also gain one space orthogonally.
  2. When a piece captures another piece, put that other piece on your bench, as is (don't unpromote or reset or anything), and the piece you just moved's movement ability is XORed with the captured piece's movement ability. All pieces can always move one space straight forward.
  3. Pieces that can only move one space straight forward and nothing else count as pawns for purpose of drops, other pieces do not.
  4. Kings stay as is when capturing and do not change.

Notes

Pieces change all the time! Probably cannot be played with normal Shogi set, can be played better on computer, with symbols representing how each piece can move.

You can find some icons to use as the pieces made by Fergus Duniho at Xorix Shogi Pieces. These use hexadecimal numbers as the piece names.

Here is a sample game, which shows you (and me) what pitfalls can be avoided:
