Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for November, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Lev Grigoriev.

Comrade Chess

There’s a piece called a Friend, which uses the moves of friendly pieces protecting it. Earlier it appeared only in problems, but in 2023 year, one lucky variantist B. Greenwade has invented a pretty almost normal game which features that piece: by the way there’re four of them, and they’re even royal! But while this inventor is good at creating big games with many strange chessmen and rules, I offer quite simple deviation which however also leads to completely different gameplay…

Rules

Setup is standard, but it uses Comrade instead of Queen.
Not every ruler has a wife, but if he has, not every wife is good in a battle; old good friend can be much better.

Comrade is King+Friend compound. He moves as regular chess King, one square in any direction, but without being hindered by check or checkmate; also he borrows a movement of any friendly piece which protects him (even the Pawn with its double step), like the Friend. He is the strongest chessman here.

Other rules are as in FIDE chess, but Pawns can’t promote to Comrades.
