Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for November, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, John Smith.

Rotating Cylinder Chess

A bit of a note is that this is effectively the cylindrical version of Joao Pedro Neto's "Don't Cross Midnight".

Setup

Same as FIDE Chess.

Pieces

Same as FIDE Chess.

Rules

Same as FIDE Chess, except: En Passant can only be done on the square the Pawn passed on its last move. After every move by one player, the board's pieces are displaced one space horizontally to the right. Pieces on the edge go to the opposite edge of the board.

Notes

This is one of my few modest variants. It resembles FIDE Chess in that moves never wrap around; only normal moves can be made, but it resembles Cylinder Chess in that there is not so much of a centre to the board.
