Rebel Fury

This variant was developed to allow the V.R. Parton's game of Royal Fury to express itself both in territory and depth of play. Adjustments were made to not only the size of the field but also to powers of the pieces and their initial setup.

Players should find this game both interesting and challenging.

Setup

Play occurs on a 12x12 field, with the following starting pattern: A = Advancer C = Capricorn D = Dragon F = Fury G = Gorgom H = Harpy J = Jumper M = Mimotaur X = Ximaera Note that each Fury begins at a corner of the field. This is both to isolate them and restrict their starting power. Now, let's cover each piece's movement and power:

Pieces

Advancer[A] steps one vacant forward orthogonal or forward diagonal. After performing its move, it captures any enemy which is then adjacent left orthogonal or right orthogonal. This slight increase in power from the Royal Fury Advancer allows for another piece on the field which is now able to capture a Fury, and one that the Fury does not emulate. Instead of a three-cell wide attack pattern, it now has a five-cell wide pattern.

If a Mimotaur captures an opposing Advancer with its move, it may also capture an opposing Mimotaur at the same move(but not any other type of piece, or the opposing Mimotaur by itself).

Advancer may promote to the Jumper on the opponent's half of the field, seventh rank or higher. It is not mandatory that the Advancer promote upon reaching the final rank since the Ximaera can swap positions with friendly pieces in this variant.

Capricorn[C] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells. Upon reaching a  cell which is directly(in the direction of its travel) adjacent to an occupied(friend or foe) cell, it captures any enemy pieces which might occupy that cell or cells which are orthogonally adjacent to that cell and adjacent its target cell.  For example:

The Capricorn on e5 moving to e9 is able to capture any enemy pieces on d10, e10 and f10. Or if moving to g3 can capture enemy pieces on g2, h2 and h3. But moving to l5 it is unable to capture enemy pieces on l4 and l5 since it does not encounter a piece before meeting the field's edge.

The Capricorn must actually encounter a piece with its slide in order to accomplish its capture. Think of it as striking an object and the shock waves traveling to the adjacent cells. There is no effect with any friendly piece which occupies these cells, but all enemy pieces are removed from play.

When using the Capricorn form of capture, the Mimotaur is able to only capture enemy Capricorn, Fury and Mimotaur(and this last only if one of the other two are captured at the same time). The logic being that these pieces are the only ones with the potential of this particular power.

Dragon[D] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells. Upon encountering an occupied(friend or foe) cell. leaps it, captures if foe, and continues its slide on the other side. In this variant, the Dragon is not permitted additional leaps within a single turn. The Dragon is subject to the Gorgon gaze in every cell of its slide before and after it leaps the occupied cell.

Fury[F] combines the power of the Capricorn, Dragon, Gorgon, Harpy, Jumper and Ximaera. Each power is seperate and distinct. In other words, if the Fury performs a Harpy leap and capture it is NOT permitted to make a Capricorn capture at the same time. If it performs a Dragon leap-capture, it is not permitted to make a Harpy capture during that particular move. This small decrease in the power from the Fury of Royal Fury allows the players to more easily extrapolate their moves during play.

Gorgon[G] slides orthogonal or diagonal, and captures on its last. This is the same as in Royal Fury. The exception is the effect of its gaze on enemy pieces. No enemy piece may move through or from a cell which falls under the Gorgon gaze. This apples only to that portion of the enemy's move which does not involve a leap. Such as the Jumper. Or the cell occupied by the piece which the Dragon leaps. Or those cells from the occupied cell which the Harpy leaps to its target. Any cells which the enemy piece might end its move is subject to the Gorgon gaze. The Gorgon is also subject to the gaze of the Mimotaur.

The gaze of the Gorgon consists of any cell which it might move through and to. The gaze of the Gorgon does not hinder the gaze of opposing Gorgons, though they may deter one another's movement. The gaze is only blocked by a piece, friend or foe(the last being subject to its effect).

This increase in power from the Royal Fury Gorgon gaze allows the player to divide up the playing field into combat sectors. Though sliding pieces are not able to cross the orthogonal gaze of the Gorgon, the diagonal gaze can be penetrated. 

Harpy[H] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells, upon encounter an occupied cell(friend or foe) leaps directly, over any number of vacant cells, to the next occupied cell which must be enemy-occupied to capture. The Harpy is only subject to the Gorgon gaze during its slide before its leap of the first occupied cell.

Jumper[J] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells, or leaps to the opposite corner cell, vacant or enemy-occupied, of a 2x3 area. This increase in its movement differentiates it from the Knight of the Mad Queen variant. It is subject to the Gorgon gaze during its slide.

Mimotaur[M] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells. Attacks opponent pieces with their own specific powers. When performing the Capricorn attack, it captures only those pieces with the Capricorn power(including the opposing Mimotaur if an opposing Capricorn or Fury is also captured, but not a Mimotaur alone). 

Ximaera[X] slides orthogonal or diagonal through vacant cells. Upon encountering an occupied cell, whether friend or foe, it swaps its starting cell position with that piece. The ability to swap positions with friendly pieces was added to help free those which have fallen under the Gorgon gaze.

Rules

The game is won by simply capturing both opposing Fury. There is no drawn game condition, so the player can lose a Fury and still win the game. Stalemate is considered a loss for the player unable to perform any move. Repetition of position is not permitted.

There is no obligation to move a Fury which becomes under attack.
