Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for November, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Adrian Alvarez de la Campa.

Pretentious Chess

Some chess players may consider compound pieces such as the Amazon and Cardinal to be pretentious. In this variant the Queen, Bishop, Rook, and even the King may move as a Knight, but as a consequence of doing so, they are demoted to a Knight.

Setup

Rules

All standard Chess rules apply. All pieces (except Pawns) are given the ability to move as a Knight but demote to a Knight when doing so. If the King should move as a Knight, it becomes a Royal Knight.
