Cypher Chess, or c-chess for short, is defined by several key inversions of classical dynamics. The power a piece has to capture another is determined not just by piece type but by the sector of the board in which it is placed. There are three sectors on the board-- the Court, the Field, and the Border. Depending on the sector in which a piece is placed, it may be protected by total, partial or no sanctuary, while having the ability to attack select pieces. Classical dynamics are further altered by the addition of the Cypher, or Spy, which dominates the Court area. Unlike classical pieces supporting the King, he acts primarily as a trigger piece and cannot be removed from the board (except in one unlikely scenario). Movement of the Spy allows the player to access Court with select pieces, put the opposing King into check, and win the game through flipping, a maneuver novel to this variant.
