Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for December, 2024.

This page is written by the game's inventor, Bob Greenwade.

Dai Kagamigi

Dai Kagamigi (which, if I've done this right, would translate as "Large Mirror Chess") is a larger variation on Kagamigi, with a larger board and (of course) more pieces -- specifically, more pieces that reflect each other left-to-right. Where Chu Kagamigi (the set's "middle child") expands the 9x9 board to 12x12, Dai Kagamigi goes one step further and expands to 15x15.

Setup

The game is played on a 15x15 board, such as one intended for Dai Shogi.

Rules

Except where noted otherwise, the normal rules for shogi apply here, excluding the use of drops.

Promotions: All pieces that promote may do so upon reaching the opponent's Pawn Row (9 for White, 4 for Black) or beyond. Promotion is mandatory for Pawns and Lances upon reaching the furthest row (12 for White, 1 for Black), since otherwise they'd be trapped in place.

Promoted pieces, when captured, immediately and automatically demote to their original form.

Notes

A special thanks to A.M. DeWitt, whose help with this group of games -- this one in particular -- has been invaluable.

The Blue Gecko is actually a creation of Adrian King, for his game Jupiter. I created the Purple Finch as a reflection, originally just on principle though the two pieces do go nicely with this game.

The East and West Wind also come from Jupiter.

Similarly, the Silver Pashtun and Gold Pashtun were invented in 2007 by Charles Gilman, and featured in his variant Pashtun Shogi (presented on his page for Shogi-set Nearlydouble Variants). I extrapolated the Copper Pashtun from those two (and I'm not the first, though I really don't know who is).

I also created the Grey Rhinoceros to as a reflection of the White Tiger.

All other pieces are from various forms of Shogi, primarily Taikyoku, Tai, and Ko.
