Check out Atomic Chess, our featured variant for November, 2024.

Ascension

Ascension is played on a 6x6 board like with two King pieces flanked by a Ferz and a Waziron each side. Six Pawns are placed on the second rank.

Setup

Pieces

The King moves as in Orthodox Chess.

The Pawn cannot double advance on its first move and hence also without the en passant ability.

Two Ferz pieces are placed directly adjacent to the Kings, and they move and capture one square diagonally.

Two Wazir pieces are placed at the corners of the back rank, and they move and capture one square orthogonally.

Rules

Promotion

Each pieces in Ascension promote upon reaching the enemy side (4th rank from the point of view of the promoting player):

  • King promotes to Queen, but is still subject to check
  • Pawn promotes to Knight
  • Ferz promotes to BBishop
  • Wazir promotes to Rook

Castling

Either King can castle with the Wazir on its side. The King moves to the position of the Wazir, and the Wazir moves to the original position of the Ferz adjacent to it in the castling move.

Checkmate

Similar to The Consuls, the game is won when either King is checkmated. A fork or a skewer checkmate is also possible.

Notes

Each piece's moveset is enhanced when they promote after reaching the enemy side, hence the name Ascension.
