Queens (conquer style)
By Gerd P. Degens
For the game each player needs 7 queens, 4 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights and 1 king. The game is played without pawns. The conquer rule applies - see below.
King and knight move in the standard way, the moves for queen, rook and bishop are restricted.
The game is played on the usual 8 x 8 standard board. The FIDE rules apply - with the following exceptions.
Setup
Pieces
The usual set of pieces is used; the modified move options are described below.
Rules
Castling takes place unchanged - now between king and queen.
Bare king loses.
Stalemate is a win.
King and knight move in the standard way, for the moves of queen, rook and bishop the following applies:
Queen (halfqueen)
The halfqueen's range is 3 squares in each of her move directions.
Rook (quarterrook)
The range of the quarterrook is 2 squares in each of its move directions.
Bishop (quarterbishop)
The range of the quarterbishop is 2 squares in each of its move directions.
Conquer mechanism
- A captured piece remains on the board; the position of this piece is the square from which the capturer came from (see the example below).
- On the new position of the captured piece, assimilation into the opponent's army takes place in a logical second, as it is replaced by an identical piece of the opponent (see example).
- If a situation appears where perpetual recapture becomes possible, the following applies: same moves as previous moves in the same position are excluded.
Example: White moves Nf4 Nd5

(The interactive diagram is only partially compatible with the conquer rule. This means that the AI crashes after a number of moves due to perpetual recaptures. The game is playable on Game Courier without any problems.)
