Check out Janggi (Korean Chess), our featured variant for December, 2024.

Since Java is no longer supported in most browsers, our Java applets probably will not run unless you install an extension that will run them. We recommend installing the CheerpJ Applet Runner extension on Edge, Chrome, or another Chromium browser. If your browser still does support Java, and you're not using this extension, make sure this site is listed in your Java exceptions list. You should find this in the Security tab of your Java control panel.

Batak Chess

If you had a Java-capable browser, you could play Batak Chess here.
Keys "s"=save "l"=load "b"=back once

The Batak are a mostly-Christian people of Sumatra.

Pinned pieces cannot give check. The king can make any two-square leap, including a knight's move, on the first move. Later the rook move can complete castling. The king's pawn, if it advances one on its first move, can advance two on its second move. Discovered checkmate is a draw. I have not yet implemented the rule about a promoted piece moving diagonally backwards at once.

Batak players defeat the Kasparov computer in two minutes.
