King's Court Pictures
This is the fourth set in a series of pictures of chess variant sets. The theme of the series is that all the sets are finalists in the 1999 Large Variant Contest.The pictures below are of Sidney LeVasseur's King's Court. The board pictured is composed of tiles created by David Howe. The tiles were created by cutting up a rubber-backed, cloth chess board into various sized mats. The pieces are from one of Fergus Duniho's chess sets, supplemented with four wooden figurines that represent the two Chancellors and two Jesters. The 24 pawns are from two smaller sets of Fergus'.
The exaggerated oblong style of the board does indeed suggest a court, and is quite pleasing to the eye.
