It's just, when I saw that expression, it brought back nightmares of out of control flame-fests in USENET, back in the day. Personally, I think FIDE chess is in a slow downward death spiral, and I think it would not be that death spiral if chess players were more open to playing variants. Card games, particularly poker, are doing quite well--mainly because players are more open to playing variants. There was a time when 5 card stud was the cool form of poker. These days it's Texas Hold-'em. It'll probably be another variant within 20 years.
