wow, your really 'out there' blackie, trippy game, well done.
(probably the 2 ratings you got were a bit premature, so lets *bump* it)

The Princess and The Warrior ZIP file. Pieces' moves are limited by their current rank except for the two new pieces.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

plays well, i like the 'princess' and 'warrior' pieces, good game.

Penta War ZIP file. Huge game with five clans.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

well this is no doubt very interesting, amazing really. sadly, using the
small graphics makes it difficult to see the pieces clearly. i think, as
you say, it would be good if the different clans were different colors,
this would make a lot easier.
it does seem a little crowded though, once you set all the kings/clans
up.
it could be better to make the clans not so big, i don't know.
it is just difficult to test. it could even be played on smaller board,
with fewer pieces, but still, i think this is a very, very good game,
highly original. well done.

ok i got a problem. Fergus if you are there, Roberto and i are going to
start soon a couple of 'traveler' games with game courier, but the first
2 invites he sent, he didn't click on 'unrated' (these games should be
unrated we think, seeing we are allowing 'back moves', and basically we
just want to test this game etc)
anyway, roberto told me to accept invites and then delete logs, as he has
sent me 2 new invites, but now i get this line, when i try to view game
logs ..
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in
/home/chessva/public_html/play/pbmlogs/the_travelers/rlavieri2003-zcherryz
-2006-21-502.php on line 9
so i can't see any logs or anything to do with current on going games
with game courier at the moment.

looks like it's pretty obvious who broke it, doesn't it Joe :)

Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Tue, Jan 24, 2006 05:24 AM UTC:
ok, well i wasn't ready to begin playing till end of this week anyway,
Roberto, we should wait a bit then.
as soon as i type 'z' the auto 'zcherryz' comes up, and it has no
space after it, so i don't think prob came from my end .. we'll see what
happens soon, maybe let us know when to try.
thanks Fergus

Javelin Chess ZIP file. Pieces backed up by an extra row of single-capture Spearmen.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Tue, Jan 24, 2006 05:27 AM UTC:Good ★★★★
this looks interesting too, i like the javelin and the way it captures and
disappears after capture.
i think you might have an error, to do with the pawns. you say that it
captures forward (except when en passant) but if you right-click on pawn
and select 'properties' it says that it can capture diagonally also.
oh, i just noticed it also says in 'help' (mouse over piece to give
description) that pawns capture diagonally
i'll check this game out soon.
edited: tough to play (for me anyway he he) .. plays good :)

now this looks a lot better with the colors, you can tell the clans apart fairly easily .. when i get time, i'll have to test this game out now.

Modern ShatranjA Zillions-of-Games file
. A bridge between modern chess and the historic game of Shatranj.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
📝Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Tue, Jan 24, 2006 06:22 AM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
well i didn't invent this game, Joe Joyce did, i just helped write the
zrf, so i think it is ok that i rate.
this is a great game, fairly similiar to shatranj, which it is based on.
The alfil also has the fers move, and the fers also has the wazir move,
which makes it move as a king (called a general in this game).
you can also promote pawns to a lost piece, so in a sense, this game plays
more dynamic than shatranj.
this game is also played on game courier here.

your game could go up anytime from on that day, next day, up to a week, i
don't think you would wait more than a week.

a friend was saying on icc, there were gm's commenting on the topa game
where he won with double exchange sac.
after he did first exchange sac, they were saying he had 'over-extended'
lol, ahh topa, what a hero, he is setting a cracking pace with all these
wins. he is a lot different from 'drawnik' (kramnik).

ok well we got 1 game going with you as white, now to get the other going.
what do you do (anyone?) if you accepted a game to play as white, but
before you made a move, an 'earthquake' came along, so you closed the
window. now i can't see how to make a move, clicking on email says takes
me to a page that says i have accepted etc (my 2nd game with Roberto)
* i can see that it says you can log on with your userid, and access your
games to make a move, but when i do that, i still can't see how you can
do that.

Recognized Chess Variants. Index page listing the variants we feel are most significant. (Recognized!)[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
Christine Bagley-Jones wrote on Tue, Feb 7, 2006 02:25 PM UTC:
i have noticed, if you click on 'Recognized Chess Variants' on this page,
it takes you to a page where all the variants have a picture, and are
described etc etc.
now, with the game 'chaturanga for 4 players' there is this comment.

'Two player variants would be, in this theory, formed by unifying two
armies, replacing the second king by a different piece.'

i don't know who wrote this, but i don't think they have ever played the
game. First of all, this completely destroys the 'doublemate' game. It is
perfectly playable with 1 player taking 2 sides, and the other player
taking 2 sides, with all kings in the game.
It would stop the fun of having one army mated, and that
player fighting to release from mate with their other army.
Secondly, how are you going to make it balanced, where are you going to
put exactly, the kings, you will have a 'king army' attacking a
'non-king' army and 'non-king' army attacking 'king-army' for one
player, (or whatever) while the 2nd player won't have the same.
it is a natural way of the game, that 'red' and 'yellow' are against
'black' and 'green', with red in bottom left hand corner, and red
moving first, game going clockwise. red naturally attacks black, (of
course can attack green, but the way the pieces are set, it is easier and
natural to attack black, mainly because of the pawns) black natural
attacks yellow, yellow attacks green and green attacks red, so this makes
the problem of just making 2 kings.
i think it must be total speculation, to say remove a king per side and
add another piece, i have played the game, with one vs one, each taking 2
sides, it plays perfectly. I have never seen anywhere written this idea.
it comes from a conditioned mind that chess is 1 vs 1, 1 king per side.
oh and btw, red should be lower left corner, yellow is top right.

don't know, cause the inventor didn't use them in the game he made.
those pieces you mention are not in many games, but, da da, you should
check out my game 'sky', it has 0-3, 0-4, 4-4, 0-5 (technically,
fiveleaper also has a 4-3 leap, something to do with maths or
whathavenot)
and 5-5 (root-fifty-leaper, also again, has 7-1 leap too).

wow this game is stunning. it's hard to find words to describe properley,
but, it really is unbelievable, a work of art.
apart from the 'displacer', all the pieces move fairly simply. But the
gameplay is far from simple, it is extremely complex, rich in depth. Beautiful game.
Roberto and i are playing 2 games on game courier for anyone interested in
checking it out. It would a major disappointment if this game does not make
it's way to zillions.

hmm, it has been around 6 days since joe joyce has done anything, we are
playing a game, and he is playing other people too.
normally if we are playing, and he is going somewhere and won't be moving
for awhile, he will say something, so i am a bit concerned for him.
anyone have any info about him?
