I have now assigned the game of Kamikaze Mortal Shogi between myself and Greg Strong.

Carlos Carlos, Fergus Duniho, George Duke, Hans Henriksson, and Roberto Lavieri are all now free for new games. I have played all but Roberto, but Switching Chess is not ready. Carlos, Hans, and Roberto could each play George Duke, but not the rest. Since Carlos has fewer ongoing games right now, he gets the next game. So the next game assignment will be for Carlos Carlos and George Duke at Caissa Britannia. The others get to wait a while. Unless George or Carlos ask for a break, I will make the assigment Sunday or Monday.

It looks like I need to write a Switching Chess preset soon. As far as checking for checkmate and stalemate go, it would be easier to write a preset for one of the variants suggested for it. Any thoughts on whether we should go with the main variant or one of the variants suggested by Greg Strong or João Pedro Neto.

i've only played one game of this, but greg strong's variant (you can't switch under check) makes sense to me.

My game of Shogi with Hans Henriksson has ended, freeing us both for more games. Other people who have currently less than four tournament games going on are Carlos Carlos, George Duke, and Roberto Lavieri. Since Hans has played everyone listed but George Duke, the next game to be assigned will be the Shatranj game between George Duke and Hans Henriksson. I will assign this game tomorrow so long as neither player asks for a break in the meantime.

Let me mention here that Greg Strong is able to move in our Kamikaze Mortal Shogi game. He mentioned a bug in the Kibbitz section of the game, and I responded in the same place, but he has not moved yet. I tried to email him about this last night, but my email couldn't get through.

I have now assigned the Shatranj game between Hans Henriksson and George
Duke.

With the game of Fischer Random Chess between George Duke and Andreas
Kaufmann over, the people free for new games are Carlos Carlos, Fergus
Duniho, George Duke, Hans Henriksson, Andreas Kaufmann, and Roberto
Lavieri. Some of the these people have played each other already, and some
presets are not ready yet. Andreas has played everyone listed but me and
Roberto. Marseillais Chess is not yet ready. So, the next game to be
assigned will be the game of Grand Chess between myself and Andreas
Kaufmann. Unless Andreas asks for a break, I'll assign this game
tomorrow.

Now that my game of Fischer Random Chess with Joe Joyce is over, the following people are free for new games: Carlos Carlos, Fergus Duniho, George Duke, Hans Henriksson, Joe Joyce, and Roberto Lavieri. Since Shatranj is ready and certain other games are not, the next game to be assigned will be the game of Shatranj between Joe Joyce and Roberto Lavieri. I will assign this Sunday if neither asks for a break in the meantime.

Four more games have ended. These are Roberto Lavieri and Hans Henriksson at Extinction Chess, Michael Madsen and Carlos Carlos at Grand Chess, Gary Gifford and Michael Nelson at Fischer Random Chess, and Antoine Fourriere and Andreas Kaufman at Alice Chess. This leaves everyone except Joe Joyce, Thomas McElmurry, and Greg Strong available for new games. Unless participants ask for a break in the meantime, I will assign the following games tomorrow:

Caissa Britannia

Fergus Duniho and Michael Nelson

Maxima

Gary Gifford and Carlos Carlos

Antoine Fourriere and George Duke

Roberto Lavieri and Michael Madsen

Three more games have finished. These are Michael Nelson and Roberto Lavieri at Shogi, Gary Gifford and Joe Joyce at Grand Chess, and Joe Joyce and Greg Strong at Pocket Mutation Chess. I will figure out who to assign to new games tomorrow, since I need to go to sleep now.

With the recently finished games, those ready for new games are Carlos Carlos, Fergus Duniho, Gary Gifford, Hans Henriksson, Joe Joyce, Andreas Kaufmann, Roberto Lavieri, Michael Nelson, and Greg Strong. Due to some presets not being ready, some games won't be assigned yet. Rule-enforcing presets for Marseillais Chess, Switching Chess, and Hostage Chess are all partially finished, but I have been suffering from computer-related eyestrain and attendant headaches, and that delays my work on these. I also need to get around to doing Chess with Different Armies. So these four games won't be assigned yet. But since 3 of my 4 remaining games are 3 of these, I had better get started on them soon. The next games to be assigned will be these:

Caissa Britannia

Gary Gifford vs. Roberto Lavieri

Extinction Chess

Joe Joyce vs. Andreas Kaufmann

Assuming no one asks for a break, I will assign these tomorrow.

I have assigned the game of Extinction Chess between Joe Joyce and Andreas Kaufmann. Since Gary Gifford has asked for a delay of about 4 or 5 days, I will plan to assign the game of Caissa Britannia between him and Roberto Lavieri on Saturday.

Because late April and early May is a very busy time of year for people who teach or go to college, I have been letting the tournament slow down, so that those of you who do teach or go to college have more time to grade or do homework. Also, I need the time to finish some presets, and computer related eyestrain has still been bothering me. I plan to let the tournament pick up pace again around mid-May. In the meantime, if anyone doesn't need the time off and wants new games right now, let me know.

Hmm... I'm not sure why, but there are comments for this page that show up on the 'What's New' comment list, but not on this page itself. For example, Fergus' recent comment about letting the tournament slow down because of finals, etc.

Greg, you might want to try a 'Refresh' or a 'Ctrl-Refresh' (assuming you are running on a PC) -- I suspect you are looking at a cached page.

George W. Duke has not made moves in the Tournament in the last two weeks. George, please come back again. Sometimes there are differences, sometimes there are light or deep differences, but differences are normal between people, all of us are humans, but all of us have at least one thing in common: we are interested in Chess Variants.

I have just updated the table of wins, losses, and draws. I will assign new
games tomorrow. Because I have been busy, I have not found the time to
finish writing rule-enforcing presets for the games still without them. I
am not going to have the time in the near future, and if things work out
for me, I won't have time in the far future either. So I will assign some
games with only dumb presets available for them, which means that
rule-enforcement will be up to the players.

George Duke ran out of time in all his current games and so has lost them.
I won't assign any more of his games unless he states his intention to
continue with the tournament. If he does not state any intention to
continue with the tournament before the remaining games finish, I will
consider his remaining games forfeit, and his opponent in each remaining
game shall be considered the winner.

Greg Strong wrote on Wed, Jun 1, 2005 04:12 AM UTC:
I, personally, think that dumb-presets for the tournament are just fine.
And, if you rushed to create rule presets, they might have bugs, and that
would create its own problems.

Anyway, I hope by saying that you might not have time in the long term you
mean that you have some lucrative new opportunity lined up! In any event,
I'm sure the tournament will stagger along, and I think I speak for all
participants when I say that we appreciate all your efforts, without which
this tournament *obviously* would not be possible.

Maybe I will find some time to finish the other presets, since I do have to
wait for books I requested from ILL. So I'm going to start by assigning
games for presets that are already finished. Here are the games. I'm
listing White first for each match. I'm also including a count for the
number of games this makes for each player, so that no one goes over
four.

Caissa Britannia
Michael Madsen (2) vs. Joe Joyce (1)

Chinese Chess
Joe Joyce (2) vs. Antoine Fourriere (2)
Thomas McElmurray (3) vs. Hans Henriksson (1)
Andreas Kaufmann (3) vs. Michael Madsen (3)

Extinction Chess
Greg Strong (1) vs. Antoine Fourriere (3)
Michael Nelson (1) vs. Thomas McElmurray (4)

Rococo
Antoine Fourriere (4) vs. Carlos Carlos (2)

Shatranj
Greg Strong (2) vs. Andreas Kaufmann (4)
Michael Madsen (4) vs. Michael Nelson (2)

Since it's late, I'm already very tired, and I want to give some time for
giving you all notice of which games you're playing next, I'll make the
game assignments for the games listed in my previous message tomorrow.

In the meantime, I want to settle on the method used for selecting armies
in Chess with Different Armies. David Paulowich suggested giving Black
first choice and White second choice with full knowledge of Black's
choice. Greg Strong pointed out that doing it this way would give an extra
advantage to White, and he suggested instead to follow the same order of
choices but to not let White know of Black's choice before making his
own. Of course, giving an order to the choices makes sense here only if
both players may not use the same army. Let's assume that this is
desired. One problem arises with Greg's method. When White has to make a
second choice because his first is taken by Black, he then knows what
Black has chosen, and he can choose the army he thinks is the best match
for it. Thus, White would still sometimes have the advantage of knowing
what Black has chosen. So I propose this instead. Give first choice to
White and, with Black knowing what White has chosen, give second choice to
Black. This would give the advantage of a more informed choice to Black.
What do the rest of you think of this?
