One of the ways one can apply directionality to such pieces is to make them radially directional rather than have that directionality defined by forwards, sideways or backwards motions. In other words, a radially directional giraffe / centripetal-ferz could have the option of moving one ferz move toward the center of the board. Just a passing thought that emerged from a conversation with Joe Joyce where he pointed out that a Falcon starting on the edge of a 4 x 4 set of squares will never be able to access the center four squares but only skirt around them. On a 5 x 5 set of squares, a Falcon can never access the central square. Same is true of a knight starting on the edge of a 3 x 3 set of squares.
