Capped Pawns (Bemützte Bauern)
This is a modest Chess variant played with a usual Chess set and some removable hats for the pawns.Setup
The setup is the same as in FIDE Chess except that all pawns wear a hat in the inital setup.Pieces
The back rank pieces are the same as in FIDE Chess. The pawns are altered: They are allowed to make a double move once in their career, not necessarily in their first step. They carry a removable hat as a marker of the double-step privilege, once they have used the double step, the hat is removed from the pawn. A pawn can be captured en passant by another pawn in the half move immediately after the double step.Rules
The rules are exactly the same as in FIDE Chess except for the altered pawns.Notes
The Capped Pawn is a superset of the standard Pawn and the Zabel Pawn that has an optional double step from rank 6 to rank 8. Because it has more options than a standard Pawn it is slightly enhanced in its value, but I daren't give figures how much.
The term "capped pawn" or Pion coiffé was used in handicap chess with a different meaning: with this very strong handicap (about Queen odds) the stronger player commits to checkmate with the marked pawn. The selected Pawn was marked with a hat or a ring.
