Centurion Chess
As a passionate chess player I have reached the conclusion that a 8x8 board is too small, and a 12x12 board is too big, and a game would take too long to finish.
But a 10x10 board is just perfect, when combined with some modified rules, and a Roman style battle formation.
Setup
The initial setup looks like this:
Pieces
Each player has 10 Legionnaires (Pawns), 2 Rooks, 4 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Consuls (Queens), and 4 Centurions.
Chess pieces move like regular chess pieces.
Centurions move one square orthogonally in any direction, but capture diagonally forward up to two squares. Centurions can also move up to two squares orthogonally forward on the first move.
Centurions promote to Dictator (King) when reaching the last rank and win the game.
Rules
All chess rules apply. There is no castling.
When a Centurion reaches the promotion line promotes to Dictator (King) and wins the game.
Centurions cannot promote on a square that is in check or would checkmate the Dictator (King).
If all four Centurions of a player get captured the game is lost.
