Kings castle

By Gerd P. Degens

Kings castle - a game with hurdles.

Kings, pawns and knights get new moves.

The game is played on a 9 x 9 board. The FIDE rules apply - with the following exceptions.

Setup

Rules

Except for the following changes, the Fide rules apply.
Castling and pawn promotion takes place.

King

The king can generally move to an adjoining square.
If an opponent's piece is on a square that the king can reach in two king moves and there is no piece in between, the king can capture this piece.

Castling: This is a move of the king and either rook of the same colour along the player’s first rank, counting as a single move of the king and executed as follows: the king is transferred from its original square two squares towards the rook on its original square, then that rook is transferred to the square the king has just crossed.

Including castling, the move diagram looks like this:

Lancer

The lancer either moves one square diagonally forward without capturing, or one or two squares forward on which the opponent's pieces can be captured. If there is an opponent's piece on the third square forward, it can be captured. The lancer cannot jump over pieces.

The move diagram looks like this:

Double Knight

The knight may move to one of the squares nearest to that on which it stands but not on the same rank, file or diagonal. With the double knight, the move options are doubled. This means that the knight can leap directly to a space two knight leaps away

The move diagram looks like this:
