Swedish Hopper Chess
This page contains one or more presets for playing a game online with Game Courier, an online server for playing Chess variants by correspondence.
This is a preset for an experimental idea I had in mind for some time, searching for an adequate replacement of the rightly-called Mad Queen. Click here to start the preset. The Swedish Hopper is inspired by the M Winther's Swedish Cannon. It moves and captures like a Grasshopper, but may also capture as a King. If and only if no Grasshopper moves are possible, it may move like a King. (Or an even nuttier variant, it may teleport without capturing to any square on the board, giving checkmate if it may.) All other rules are as in Orthodox Chess. Pawns may NOT promote to Queens. They may only promote to a Hopper, Rook, Knight or Bishop. How much do you estimate this piece's value ? The Teleporting version is certainly very valuable (I wouldn't trade it for a Rook.)
