nice pics. how long did that take to set up? and what's that in your hand, tongs? use them to adjust pieces?
whether it's originally correct or not, the term mao is standard among problemists and has been for a long time, possibly decades - my copies of Dickens' and Dawsons' books are packed away, so I can't look up if they refer to it or not, maybe somebody else can for me. anyway, the point is, even if there was some translation error way-back-when, that's the name of the piece in english now, and it's extremely unlikely that it will change. it was certainly not an error by the author.
ed trice is running a gothic chess tournament on brainking. first prize is $250 and there is no entry fee. I sent a more detailed annoucement on it to aronson last night but i don't know how long it will be before he gets it posted. you can also find further information at www.brainking.com.
unfortunately brainking has been down all day. that is the one drawback to brainking, it is not always reliable, it is not unusual for it to go down for a period of 24 hours or more. <P>
when this happens tho, all players automatically get more time added to their games so they don't forfeit. so i would not be surprised if they extend the GC tourney signup date as well. i will keep everybody posted. <P>
btw, last time i checked, there were 67 people signed up, so it should be a good tourney.
i will be impressed when somebody invents 'doublewide tai shogi'
>>>Well I intend to answer the question once and for all of which is a better game, Doublechess or Doublewide chess, by having zillions of games play it as a game of chess between different armies. i don't understand what this proves.
the cost of the molds doesn't answer the question of why the sets cost so much. both omegachess and gothicchess presumably also use plastic molds (and make more interesting pieces, altho i doubt that is a significant factor in cost), yet last time i checked, they cost only about half what this game does.
this looks like an interesting game, and i've had several conversations where people mention it, yet surprisingly there is no cv.com page for it other than this one. i'd really like to see somebody make a zillions zrf for it.
link is currently broken, anybody know anything about this one?
i have a big problem with this page - i can't figure out how to post an open invitation to the waiting room. i have searched all around for the answer and can't find it.
ok, i figured it out. but it's hardly easy to find. this page could definitely use some additional links and explanation.
this is great. i have to admit that when i saw 'how to alter standard plastic pieces' i expected to see butchered pieces that were more functional than attractive, but i was pleasantly surprised. they are very nice and i hope mr. hempseed comes up with more combinations for us. <P>
he is correct that fairy chess pieces are hard to find; he may be interested in the omegachess and gothicchess pieces, which will give him more combinations at reasonable cost. <P>
i hate to sound like one of those people who always have to turn the conversation to promoting their own game, but this page definitely has application to my own game of 'elevator'. concerning what i wrote there on the subject of making a set, this could be the solution i've been looking for. perhaps mr. hempseed will be inspired to come up with combinations for the prince, camel, and ox. <P>
i'm having a problem with this one and i'm hoping somebody can help me. i've successfully used this zrf with zillions 1. i recently got zillions 2, and i've redownloaded the zip and unzipped it, but i can't get the zrf to open. i get an error message 'the following bitmap couldn't be loaded: 'images\_Custom\Hexchess\hex6x6gs.bmp'. yet everything appears to be where it should be. so why would this be occurring?
thanks, but unfortunately this did not solve the problem for me. i'm not sure what else to try. i downloaded the 2.0 to 2.01 patch today. <P>
incidentally, any zrf should operate out of the 'rules' folder, that's why it's there. it's hard enough keeping my zillions folder organized as it is. any zrf that doesn't operate out of the rules folder i will rate 'poor' and request that it be fixed. <P>
when i click on the 'logs' link, i get a page can't be found error. this is esp a problem for me right now because that's precisely what i was looking for.
i see what's happening. if i click on the 'logs' link at the bottom under 'see also', it works. but if you go up to the paragraph 'how to play a game by email' and click logs, it doesn't, because it's looking for an address ending in .html instead of .php. so you need to fix that.
when i try to unzip this file i get an error that it's corrupted and can't be unzipped. anybody else having this problem?
yes, sorry, as soon as i sent the last comment on i discovered that i was having the same problem with every zrf zip i downloaded, so it must've been a problem on my end. i never did figure out what it was, but restarting the computer solved it, so no worries.
carlos, the answers to your questions are: <P>
1) no <BR>
2) yes <P>
fergus, the info on how to resign should be added to the 'user's guide' page.
i don't know that this game necessarily ignites any controversy for previous games. there are a lot of pieces in this that are different from the pieces of the same name in other shogi variants, so nothing in this game helps prove anything one way or another. <P> i began making a set a couple years ago but i lost interest because of uncertainties in the rules and because it seems to be mostly a collection of pieces from other variants thrown together with little new. <P>
indeed, breadman is correct. i will have to update the page. <P>
checkmate can't be forced tho, in the diagram, if it is white to move, it means black must have just played K a7-a8, in which case he also had the option of capturing the W. (and if the white K is on c7 instead, W b6-b7 is no longer checkmate.) <P>
also, i will have to look into my statement that 'stalemate is a win' in ultima, i think i based that claim on the zillions' implementation, which is different from the official rules for technical reasons. <P>
the sets definitely look nice but the pics are not good quality and there's little detail. i'd be very interested in seeing additional pics, esp closeups of some of the pieces. and i agree with mhowe, i have no idea how much he's going to charge for them, but you can be sure it's a lot. whenever prices aren't listed, it's never a good sign.
