Yes, Balanced Marsellais, please; otherwise White has a huge advantage.

Yes, (Balanced) Marseillais Chess is one of the most stable and fair chess variants in existence.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Sun, Feb 6, 2005 05:52 PM UTC:
I would suggest to play Balanced Marseillais according to the ECV's rule which states that you may capture a Pawn en passant only when that Pawn advanced in the second part of your opponent's move.

Roberto: it has been a long time since I qualified as a new player - I was playing here back in 2001. See the webpage for '1st Email Championship Chess with Different Armies'.

I register for GCT#2

I thanked Roberto privately for his payment of my fee, then realized it
should be done publicly, so:
Thank you, Roberto. As you suggested, $5.00 is being given to a charity,
as a sort of 'pay-forward'. Joe
ps: I expect to get killed in this tournament. Like my favorite baseball
team, the Mets, I'll have a 'wait til next year' sign on opening day.

Is still Peter Boddy interested on the Tournament?. Days ago, he said he would want to play, but there is not more information. Other inscriptions?. Are there more people interested?. Tony, Fergus, Carlos Carlos, Mark, Mike, Mike, Thomas, Ben, etc... are you going to play?. To other frequent users of the CVP: encourage yourself and play!. You are going to have a lot of fun, results are not the most important things, the important is the contact with a few nice variants you can play in the Tournament, and it is very possible you can feel the beauty of these variants in many instances of the Tournament. Register!

I'm supprised that there have been no new signups in two weeks ... Still at seven participants. Anyone out there forget to register?

Sign up, if you did not yet.

I'm planning to play in the Tournament. I can't remember my PayPal
password, so I'll have to mail in a check.

I've been pretty busy and didn't find the time to vote in the approval
and preference polls, but it looks like you all chose a great set of games
without me -- hence the 'Excellent' rating [withdrawn 2005-04-16].

I hope this year's Tournament is as much fun as last year's!

How do I chose which of the games that I will take part in?

David Paulowich wrote on Sat, Feb 26, 2005 06:38 PM UTC:
Looks like you will be conducting a 10 player round robin - starting off with something like four games for each player. I can email a 6.5 kilobyte PDF file containing the official Canadian 'Round Robin Pairing Schedule', for anything up to 18 players. Consider numbering these players from #1 to #10, in order of estimated strength. You could simply fill in the top four positions according to their scores in the previous tournament. It is then a simple matter to start off with pairings in which the top four players do NOT meet each other. Two benefits: [1] they do not have to start off playing the 'same old faces' [2] the deciding game between tournament leaders will probably happen later in the event.

This tournament will be run much the same as last year's. I will not be using any official rules for round robin tournaments, Canadian or otherwise. So please don't email me any. The procedure for assigning games and pairing people up is already given on this page. It is in the paragraph just above the table listing the games. The primary factor in pairing people up will not be estimated playing ability, which is largely a big unknown with new games and new people, but common preferences for the same game. As for who gets paired with whom first, this will be a matter of which games the tournament starts with. As I did last year, I will try as much as I can, given varying preferences, for everyone to be playing the same games at the same time, and I expect to start out with the more established variants.

Tomorrow (February 28) will be the last day to sign up. If you cannot use Paypal or there will be a delay in your payment for any other reason, please let me know of your intention to sign up by the end of February. I will then count you as signed up and let your payment come when it can. I myself am having trouble with Paypal, as I forgot my password, lost the email account I signed up for Paypal with, and have the wrong phone number on file with them.

I'm still undecided about whether to enter this tournament. Among the top 14, I'm interested in only half. So I may just focus on running the tournament instead of participating in it.

Roberto Lavieri wrote on Mon, Feb 28, 2005 09:13 PM UTC:
Fergus, if you sign up, Fischer Random Chess can be played, and you may have more games to make your selection. This is valid for other interested players!. On the other hand, it should be interesting explore the idea of a 'Parallel Game Courier Tournament', on the Japanese theme, with Shogi and variants, for those who have not signed the Second Tournament. I suggest Shogi, Kamikaze Mortal Shogi, the big board HexShogi, Grand Shogi (the new posted game) and Hostage Chess, perhaps a couple more, as the games to be played. I bet the number of interested people is not so little, it is enough to see the LOGS quentity on this topic. Why don´t try?

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Tue, Mar 1, 2005 12:41 AM UTC:
If I enter the tournament and no one else does, there will be 13 participants, resulting in a total of 12 games played, and 12+3 is 15, the number for Great Chess, not Fischer Random Chess. Although I am interested in the latter, I'm not interested in the former. I could extend the number of games participants get to choose from from 3 over the number of games to 5, but that might look like I am just trying to get my own favorite game, Kamikaze Mortal Shogi, played in the tournament by bending the rules. But at least then I could find 12 games I would be willing to play.

Greg Strong wrote on Tue, Mar 1, 2005 01:09 AM UTC:

For what little it's worth, I am all for the (n + 5) approach, which would add both FRC and Kamikaze Mortal Shogi, two games that I am very interested in playing. I would be sad to see either of them not qualify. Also, perhaps, by expanding the field of games, we might entice another participant or two. I would be all for making the number of games n + 5 and giving a couple more days for additional people to take notice of the change and announce their intention to participate.

Antoine Fourrière wrote on Tue, Mar 1, 2005 02:49 AM UTC:
Since Great Chess is *very* similar to Grand Chess, I think it is wise to
add at least another game for those who dislike both. Great Chess
wouldn't have been accepted last year. And even without Great Chess, 12 +
5 is more reasonable than 12 + 3.
I also don't see anything wrong with two players choosing another game
for their match, provided the referee finds the replacement game suitable.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Tue, Mar 1, 2005 03:11 AM UTC:
Okay, barring objections, I'll sign up for the tournament, let participants choose from (n + 5) games, and get my fee in after I get access to my Paypal account. I'm now going to log off for tonight and check back tomorrow. If anyone else has signed up by then, I will add him, and then I will close off signing up and make preparations for running the tournament.

Roberto Lavieri wrote on Tue, Mar 1, 2005 12:08 PM UTC:Excellent ★★★★★
O.K., I like n+5, it is fine. As others, I want to see FRC in the Tournament, and I love Kamikaze Mortal Shogi too. Are we going to wait a couple of days more expecting new participants, or is inscription closed?.

🕸📝Fergus Duniho wrote on Tue, Mar 8, 2005 03:18 AM UTC:
Everyone who put Shogi among his top twelve got it, and it is one of the first games to be played in the tournament. If you're playing Shogi, please post your board preferences, so that I can give you the board you prefer. Give at least a first and second choice in case you and your opponent need to compromise. Piece preferences are not crucial, because you can each change your piece preferences after the game starts. My own board preferences are for the checkered board (#1) or for one of the marble boards (#2), and I rather dislike the plain, uncheckered, PNG board.

I think all participants now know that I have been sending email to an address that forwards mail to each of the participants. I won't post the address here, since I don't want it known to the public. But if you're in the tournament, and you haven't been getting email from me regarding the tournament, please let me know.
